Kaji won't eat his kibble I switched him from the food his breeder sent with him to Lotus dry kibble in chicken flavor, over a month ago and I did the switch slowly. At first he ate this up real quick, especially when it was Danger's food (roommate's pom that is on the same food but senior diet). For a few days now, he won't touch his kibble when I set it down. He'll eat sometimes when I'm away at work because all he has in his expen are his stuffed animals, which he uses as cushions, a bowl of water and his kibble. Sometimes he'll even do tricks for pieces of kibble. He is still really active and wants to play outside all the time. I try to make his food interesting by adding fresh veggies to it. I know I would be tired of food if I had to eat the same thing everyday, twice a day. Every once in a while I'll add two baby carrots, chopped, or I'll add tomato, chopped apples, or if I have any some of the canned lotus food. I try making the addition as random as I can so he doesn't come to expect little extras in his kibble. I don't really like adding squishy food because of his teeth. I also read through some old YT threads and many mentioned that their babies seem uninterested in their kibble and then go right back to eating their food. Any tips to get him eating again? Or is this break from food simply a yorkie trait? |
By adding stuff to it, you are making him more picky. Dogs do not get bored with eating the same food every day. to them food is food, it is not entertainment. they do not always eat the same amount every day. I have 8 of them, they are all fed together, share the same bowls. some days they eat it all, other days there is some leftover by the end of the day. If he is getting treats and the extras that you add to it. He might not be hungry enough to eat it. I would cut out all esle and just feed the kibble. |
Even if I only add stuff to his kibble twice a week? By twice a week I mean, he is fed kibble twice a day, morning and night, and out of his 14 meals a week, two will have a special treat. When I train him, he usually only gets praise. He will work for praise beter than he works for treats. So he doesn't get a massive quantities of treats. I do worry when I put kibble down in the morning for him to eat and it's still there when I come home from work. He would much rather go eat from Danger's bowl which is the same chicken flavored kibble with the exception of it being a senior formula. He is my first dog so some of the things he does are a total mystery to me. From what I have seen, it's really hard to beleive that dogs are that 2 dimensional. Food is food and flavor doesn't mean a thing. Why then does he prefer the chicken over the other flavors? (we had samples) |
Well they can prefer one food over another, but they do not get bored with food. Dogs eat better when other dogs are eating, it's a survival instinct. If another dog is eating it I have to get my share. If you are concerned about him eating his kibble, I would cut out the other foods. If you are not concerned then go ahead and add the other foods. some people hand feed their dogs, and they get to where they will not eat unless they are being hand fed. My advice with dogs is the same advice I give my children concerning the grandchildren. "Don't start anything that you do not want to become a habit." |
I had the same problem with my puppy Stella. My sister's yorkie will eat ANYTHING and i thought there was something wrong with Stella. I brought her home and fed her Science Diet small bites on the recommendation of my vet. I heard how bad that food was for her so I switched her slowly to Blue Buffalo. At first she ate it but after a few weeks on only BB she refused to eat it. She would physically back away when I put it down. So then I switched her to Royal Canin which again, she ate for a little while (a few days) and then refused to eat. I would mix her treats in, place things on it, and try to hand feed her. I was getting fed up and finally went to Petsmart and got a few bags of food. I finally found one she enjoys and actually eats willingly. I put her on Nutro Lamb, Rice and Oatmeal and she loves it. I couldn't even switch her slowly over as she wouldnt even eat the mix of Nutro and RC. So I am anticipating some tummy upset but I am just happy she is eating again. I would recommend to just keep trying! You will find something! I am planning to return the other bags of food I bought at Petsmart. Good luck and keep trying! I know how frustrating it is when they are refusing to eat!! |
I have always had and still do have a hard time finding kibble that Nolee will eat!! |
I boil up a few chicken breasts, shred them thin and spread them all over the dog food! Works |

Jeanie K says adding stuff to his kibble is causing the problem. So I guess I just have to wait him out till he decides to eat again. |

He took two bites!! That's it!! It may be that I'mt just a new mom and I don't know what I'm doing but that's all he's had in almost 20 hours. Could it be the food???? |

try the beef, chicken apple dinner and banana from gerber baby food; mix some of each and give it to him. and then i recommend a high quality kibble or the honest kitchen; to avoid stomach upset add some probiotic to the food adn digestive enzymes if possible. good luck |

How old is he? Sophie wouldn't eat her kibble either, and then after we had the rest of her baby teeth pulled when she was spayed she started eating it like crazy!!! Never realized it could have been hurting her mouth! |
Jackson was always very picky; a little over a month ago we found Nature's Variety Instinct and he LOVES it! I highly recommend it  Great food. First food he eats voluntarily & enjoys. www.naturesvariety.com |
