Separation Distress and trip Can someone tell me what I can do when I have to leave my 16 week old puppy in a hotel friendly room? My husband and I are going to Ft. Benning, GA for our son's Ranger graduation on Friday. I don't think they will allow pets on the base.:rolleyes: I set up a camcorder the other day when I had to leave her at home for a few hours (we have only had her 2 weeks now), and she absolutely went bonkers! She cried, barked, whined, howled. When I came home, she was all over me, giving me kisses. I am so afraid someone at the hotel will turn us in or they will enter the room because of all of the noise. Help! |
Can you have someone watch her while you're gone? It might be the best thing for now. |
I can't think of anyone who has the time or who will be home. We are leaving this afternoon and will return Sunday. She loves to ride in the car, but just leaving her alone in a hotel room worries me. I don't want to use a kennel. She has enough anxiety when she is without us. Do you think children's benadryl could help her? |
At our local pet store I remember seeing something for dogs with anxiety. You need to be very careful, though, with how much you give her. |
How about doing some activity where she gets a load of exercise right before you leave? Hopefully she would be tired enough to sleep afterwards.....also, you could give her some sort of brain or time-intensive treat, like a bully stick or a kong toy filled with treats. An article of clothing that you have worn placed in her bed might help her to feel less anxious. Oh, and leave the TV on where she can see it in the hotel room! Hope this helps...... A lot of people deal with separation anxiety by giving their dogs something to keep 'em occupied like suggested above. I've seen another that got the dog used to the idea of you leaving. You do your normal routine by putting your jacket on (or what have you), walk out the front door, and come back in less than a minute later. Repeat as necessary to get the dog used to you leaving. You also have to make leaving and coming in impersonal, as difficult as it may be not to say goodbye, or pet them as soon as you come in. But if you really don't have time for that, there are some calming aids. And they're completely safe. The one that caught my eye was actually like a glade plug-in! if u want to leave her in the hotel for few hrs; you can give her some benadryl; that will make her sleep; i also use the sleepytime tonic from vitamin shop; 2 pumps and she's out and it will relax her; so hopefully no anxiety. good luck |
Thanks everyone. I took her to the vet this morning for ear problems. Turns out she had very red and inflamed ears. I'm to put ear drops in ears twice a day. He also told me to get some dramamine. It might work and it might not. Guess I'll just play it by ear. Benadryl/Dramamine. |
