Raw Food Recipes (homemade) Hi...i have been feeding Ball canned Evo grainfree and Bravo pre/mix raw ground food. I need complete raw food recipes...because of cost I need to learn to make my own raw food and I want to make sure it's balanced. Also how to encourage him to eat more bone..good for his teeth? Thanks. |
We don't use a "recipe" -- we feed prey-model which means that we try to balance out the dog's nutritional needs over time. This equals out to 80% muscle meat, 10% bone, and 10% organ meat with 5% of that being liver. This can be fed every meal but usually PMR feeders try to balance over a week or a month. We aim for a week. If you want to do this I can send you a lot of great links to do some research. Once you start PMR you'll find that it's easier than it sounds and WAY cheaper in the long run, if you buy in bulk and shop the local sales. We a part of a co-op that orders from a Texas company and get GREAT prices on orders. I don't know if you're wanting to do that or make your own "grind". I think PMR is better for many reasons, two of which being that is is easier (you don't need a meat grinder) and two, (as you mentioned) eating raw meaty bones is great for their teeth. The act of ripping and tearing meat provides both mental and physical exercise. If you still want to make a grind for whatever reasons, you could follow the same 80/10/10 ratio. There is another option.. I personally don't feed any grains or vegetables but RachelandSadie PM'ed me a great raw recipe with added grains and veggies if you're interested. I think it was formulated by a nutritionist. You could PM her directly for it. Hope this was helpful! |
Questions about the raw food diet - How does this change their stool? A couple of sites I found state we should cook the food to get rid of anything unwanted such as samolnella.... but others are saying raw.... what do I believe? Yes - you find anything you want on Google - and most of it is very contradictory. It can lead to confusion. Ultimately though, I don't want to deal with loose stool since she's using pads and doesn't always make those - so .......... |
Hi...I can tell you his stool is firm and white...whe n I fed kibble there ws a Lot more poop..almost as much poop as food..now not so much. There was an initial changeover and I used "transition powder" from my local gourmet pet food store and it helped. Please send me mroe info..yes I would appreciate it. I don't do grains at all. |
Their stool is GREAT on raw! It is smaller, less smellier, and less frequent. It pretty much dissolves after a couple of days. I had that debate with my partner last night - she is afraid of feeding human food in any form to the dog - I reminded her that before people domesticated the dog - they were eating fresh meat they killed themselves. I really want to give this a try. Thanks everyone!!! |
i feed the honest kitchen dehydrated raw food; and it's human grade and very easy to use www.thehonestkitchen.com |
NV raw over here and occasionally I give her some ground lean beef and chicken legs as treats. Her poops are tiny and she goes only once per day, half the time I can't even find them in the yard lol |
Thanks..pc was down for a few days..now back to the y.t. forums and more education..lol. Very interesting links..thanks so much. I am having an issue though..he prefers cooked food..tastewise and has "sugar crashed." from not eating and willl fst himself hoping for something better..never had this probem before..what can I do? I don't want him sick! And hopefully Tryingcake you have gotten further in your pursuit of raw food for your baby..it's the best! I've fed premadeor some raw version for several years..only economics now dictate I must make my own! It's actually kinda fun. |
I have been feeding Prey Model Raw for about a year and a half! I attempt for an 80/10/mix as someone else stated above. I will caution that if the poo is white it does mean your bone content is a little high. Remember it's mostly meat with a little bone. If you have a high content of bone in one meal then the next day you might want to feed some kind of boneless meat. My yorkie is super healthy and has a great coat, nice teeth and she only goes poo once a day usually and it's at 1/2 the size of when she way fed kibble and going 3 times a day! And I spend less than when I fed kibble too! Here are some great links: THE MANY MYTHS ABOUT RAW FEEDING RawChat : Raw Chat Good luck! |
Just joined Rawchat..let's see if I'm approved. Is it mostly p.m..? That is what interests me most..plus I need other tips on natural healthcare...which I'm not sure if we're allowed to discuss those here? Deworming specifically. |
