My yorkie is underweight, please help.. Hello everyone, I'm new in this forum...I really need advices for my yorkie's problem. Her name is Sugar, 8 1/2 half months old, weights only 1.5 pounds. I didn't really think it's a problem at first, until I brought her to vet today, asking about getting spayed... the vet said she is too small, need to wait for another 2 months. But the problem is, she didn't seem to grow a lot over the months. She weights 1.3 when she was 3 1/2 months old. I feed her the right amount of foods, didn't underfeed her, everytime after she eats, she will burp and her stomach is hard. She is very active, didn't seems to have any problem except her weight...I bought her supplements since the day I bring her home, I fed her health supplements everyday, I love her so much.. but now I'm very worried and scared, she is underweight... :'((((((((((( Anyone please please please help me? How to make her gain more weight? At least 4 pounds? Is this stage too late for her to grow more? This question has been torturing me for a really long time.. |
I don't think she will make it to 4 lbs unless she really is UNDERWEIGHT/UNDERFED. If she has been eating the right amounts and is on a good diet I would say that she is perhaps a very very tiny special girl that will likely remain around the weight she is. 8 1/2 months they are usually at their adult weight. Did the vet say she is underweight or is she healthy just tiny? |
What are you feeding her? Brand? Have you tried other brands of food? And yes, did the vet say she is underweight for her size? |
The vet said she is healthy just tiny...but the vet said it's not advisable to get her spayed at this weight. I only hope she will grow bigger for the next 2 months and ready for the operation. I'm worried the operation is dangerous for her if she's too small. :'( I really don't know what to do |
I feed her Addiction Salmon flavoured, and I give her chicken flavoured (another brand I think is Canine) as treat. I give her Puppyvite, Vetzyme and some other supplements too. She is allergic to beef.. |
I wouldnt spay her unless she gets to 2 lbs and even then its risky |
Yeah...that's why I hope she could gain more weight :( |
Feed her chicken and rice and cheese |
I'm sorry! She should be 1.8 lbs now but not 1.5 lbs. I will feed her more chicken starting tomorrow, thank you for the suggestion! :) |
Is Sugar really tiny? Or does she actually look underweight? My baby Mija is now 16 months and weighs 2lbs but she is very tiny...she still fits in the palm of my hands. It took her a long time though to get to 2lbs and she hasn't been gaining any weight for a few months now. At 3 months she weighed 1lb and didn't reach 2lbs until she was about 12 months. She got spayed when she was 10 months. At that age it was obvious she wasn't going to grow much more but the vet examined her and said that she had developed normally so they weren't scared for her weight at all. Everything went perfectly. I used to be scared of her weight/size because she was so little compared to other dogs but she's happy and healthy so i guess shes just a very tiny little one. Hope I reassured you a little... |
She still fits in my palms, but based on your photos, I think Sugar is slightly bigger than Mija. Somehow I thought tiny is underweight? By the way your Mija is very cute! :)) Sugar is 8 1/2 months now, the vet asked me to wait for another 2 months, I guess even if it doesn't grow bigger it's still fine for her to get spayed? Just like your Mija got spayed when she was 10 months :) How long did she take to be all okay? The vet advised me it's better if Sugar gained some weight...so right now I think I should feed her more..will see if she gain more weights after 2 months! Maybe I could overfeed my yorkie now and back to her normal diet after the operation? I'm so confused :'( |
If you do spay her, ask your vet if they do it with a laser. It causes a lot less bleeding. We just had it done and Nala is averagely small lol (4pounds at 6months) and the vet said she did great with the laser and is glad she used it. |
Thank you so much for the info, I will ask the vet if their hospital has got this service :))) |
Two things here- 1) weight does not = health, and 2) making her heavier by overfeeding is NOT safe. Yorkies are a tiny breed to begin with. They have tiny bones and joints, meaning they cannot and should not support more than a healthy weight. Your little girl will most likely not be over 2lbs as an adult, unless she truly is underweight now. Can you feel ribs? Does she have a depression in her waist? If not, do not feed her more, because making her fat will do more harm than good (the same thing as a naturally petite woman being fed enough to gain 25-100% of her body weight. Not good!). Bottom line- she's a tiny baby and will never be 4lbs. Good luck! |
Why does your vet say for her to gain weight? does he think she's underweight? I'm confused as i don't think he would be telling you to get your baby fat just for surgery as he knows how hard it is to get them to drop excess weight. |
