bile acid testing ? hi, i am taking sammy to the vet on oct 22nd which is next week. i called and they said there are a few different bile acid tests that they could run. does anyone know exactly what the test is called to find out anything about liver issues. i have never had blood work done on him, but because of the problem of licking, biting and licking metal objects, i am concerned. otherwise he seems normal to me. i live on long island ny, does anyone have a ball park figure what these costs? i know vets like to run unnessasary tests sometimes, and i dont need to pay for things that he doesnt need. also they said i have to drop him off and then they feed him and draw more blood. what do they feed him, because he eats on raw meat and the honest kitchen. sorry to go on and on, but with me going into surgery soon for gallbladder and liver biopsy, it is all a bit much ! |
There are two bile acid tests that I know of. One is urine, one is blood. It sounds like the blood one is the one your vet does. Out here it runs around $200. Your dog has to completely fast (no treats or anything) for 12 hrs before the test. They draw blood, then they feed the dog, wait two hours and draw more blood to compare to the first sample. |
Great Questions The Liver Shunt test your talking about bile acid test can be taken two ways One by blood the other by Pee .. I always have my puppies tested by pee .. About 4 years ago I had sent My litter to the vets with a bag of there food to eat after there Liver Shunt test Just to have the Vet Tec give my Puppies SD puppie food this lead to a Prolaps Rectum in my puppies that was Horrific. most vet tecs have no clue Make sure you take your puppie food with and tell them its important that they dont switch your puppies food .. the test alone with out exam and office visit was like 60 dollars but a would 100% agree all Yorkie have this test |
thank you for the info, i was concerned about the food, since he only eats raw meat and the honest kitchen. i am not that thrilled with leaving him especially in a cage. i would rather stay there with him , i dont care about a couple of hours. i posted under general forum about why i think he needs the test. so that is why i posted under health and diet. it is about him licking his feet and arms all the time. There are three ways it can be done: 1. paired blood samples around a meal sent to lab 2. blood draw and test ran in-house 3. urine I would only consider number 1. It is the most accurate. If you are concerned and he has never had a blood panel, he should have one. In most cases it is best to let the vet give their own food because some like to do it with food that is high in protein and/or fat. |

BTW, while it's good to check for liver shunt in all Yorkies, those symptoms wouldn't necessarily suggest that there is. |
but do you think he will get an upset stomach from eating that vet food. it is not the best food. i am very careful on what he eats, plus he eats raw meat which i would say is high in protein. Quote:
