itching and scratching
 
Hi everyone! I have a little female Yorkie named Lucy Lou. She is 14 weeks old. Since we got her from the breeder she has itched like crazy. no rash, no bites, no fleas. The vet said she didn't know, maybe change food. She is on Eukaneuba puppy food. I was thinking Blue Buffalo all natural maybe? I did order some Dinovite and fishoil supplement to add to the food to see if that helps too, dont have it yet though. My other yorkie is fine, no itching. My vet also said sometimes when puppies are growing their skin gets tight and itches. I dont think that is the case though. I switched my detergent from Tide to a natural detergentwashed everything. Still now she is chewing on her back legs so much sh is losing all her hair on them. She does sleep fine and can go without scratching for a little while, but then stops to scratch. I habe only given her one bath (and she was scratching well before then too) I used paul mitchell for dogs oatmeal shampoo. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

i was reading another post and someone recommended calm coat spray and shampoo; they said it really helped. my dog itches too for no reason and her belly gets red sometime; so i think i am going to try these products

You should have your vet do a skin scrape to check for mites

They take a razor or razor like object and just scrape a piece of skin off then look at it under a microscope

I know my little girl was highly allergic to PineSol...she would itch until she bled. She lost all the hair on her belly and back of her legs where she would lay down. Once I went to just a water steamer (Shark) it stopped entirely. It could be something in the detergent that is causing the problem.

i always wanted to get the steamer shark; does it really clean? do you have to add detergent with the water? what about if you have carpets? thanks

It does clean my floors but you are NOT to add detergent...it is hot enough water to sterilize things. I do not have carpet so I don't know.

I know there have been threads on here that you might want to search to see what people think.

I would also say, if your little one continues to be miserable scratching etc then you really need to have a scrapping down. It doesn't hurt like you think and if your little girl has mites or mange then she would be so much happier being treated.

by mites; u mean like dust mites; how is that usually treated?

both of mine had it done and didnt make a peep when they did it so I really dont think it hurts

A tiny bit like a scratch. They are just taking a flaking of the skin

thanks guys for your help! I took her to the vet and the vet did a skin scrape this afternoon. Nothing. Which I am glad I guess. Anyway, she suggested changing to the Blue Buffalo all natural food and adding the dinovite supplements to see if that helps her. I do have a floor steamer, so I use that, but the carpet I use Bissell cleaner. My poor princess. Also just an fyi my vet said if they chew near their hind legs and b ottom it could be anal glands, but she checked hers and they were ok. :aimeeyork

I mentioned to the vet about how it seems like Magnus is scratching more these days. She checked him out and didn't see anything wrong. Suggested that his skin might be little dry so add little fish oil supplement to his food. (I feel the dryness as well)

I'm not sure the amount of him scratching is considered "normal" or not but he's not losing any hair or seem to be bothered too much by it. I'll do as the vet suggested and see how it goes. I hope you find out whatever that's causing the issue asap.
