New, Desperate Yorkie Mom
 

Hello everyone. I'm Kristy. I just got my first yorkie three days ago from a breeder near my home. Everything there seemed to check out ok and he seemed relatively healthy (the breeder told me upfront he had a cough and gave me a prescription that he had for it). Anyway, all he does is scratch himself and bite his paws.
He also "army crawl" around. He does laps around the living room table on his belly. At first I laughed until I cried because I thought it was so cute/funny, but now I am worried he is just doing that to scratch the spots on his belly he can't reach w/ his paws.
I sprayed his paws w/ bitter apple spray and that seemed to help. I put an anti-itch cream on his stomach that worked temporarily. He woke me up twice last night with a cough. He got worked up because he was alone on the floor by my bed and was crying; then he started coughing. I got up and gave him some of his medicine with a med dropper, then I gave him some water to wash it down via the dropper, too.
He is inherently playful, I think. He just stops all the time to scratch himself. He seems fine when he's on my lap and I'm petting him, but otherwise he's a wreck and its making me scared!
Any advice or encouragement would be appreciated.


***update*** just made a vet appt; hopefully they can give me some solid advice and not charge me too much :(

my oldest dog a lhasha has BAD allergies. if she gets a flea even just one she goes nuts scratching whining barking etc. she will chew/bite her paw til it bleeds. there are certain treats and people food we can't give her b/c it will make her scratch sometimes it gets so bad we have to take her to the vet to get a steriod shot (which isn't good for her) but we really don't have any other choice. nala my yorkie has dry skin and scratches, but not bad. i'm no expert but maybe he has allergies and the food and/or treats is making him scratch or he could have really dry skin. :confused:

kp 23 brings up a good point, in that your new Yorkie may have an allergic reaction to something in your house, perhaps carpet even. Have you asked the breeder if he acted like that before?

My Shelbie was allergic to fleas, if one bit her, she would bite at herself until she was raw. I had to make sure she always was treated with Frontline, it was the only thing that I could find that worked. I wonder if your puppy is allergic to the cough medicine? Hope you both get to feeling better soon :o

Our Toto began to do that [normally she doesn't scratch at all] ... she was constantly scratching [she was pulling wads of her hair out] and her eyes watering. Turned out she was allergic to the new carpet we just had installed!! Dr. Lucy said it was probably a dye used in the new carpet ... gave her meds for the scratching, a rinse for her coat and drops for her eyes and told us to have the carpet cleaned!! It worked! She hasn't done it since!

We just got back from the vet and she treated him for mites (yikes) and gave him some antibiotics for his dry skin and coughing. He was very well-behaved and friendly and so was the vet, so I am happy. I hope it works soon.

Great news on finding the "culprit" to little Stewies itching/scratching. Im sure after a few days of the medi you will see a huge change.

Always nice to have answers as to why our Yorkie's are going through some of their issues. :D

I had problems with mites also from the breeder, in fact, one of my boys had sarcoptic mange caused by under the skin mites. Very serious! I put my boys on Revolution which prevents all mite infestations, kills fleas and also prevents heartworm. It is cheaper than Advantage or Frontline and does more. Heartworm meds were costing me almost $200 a year and then on top of that Frontline. Revolution is $32 per dog for three months and it covers everything.

The vet said she doesn't know for sure if he has mites -- she actually said "sarcoptic mange" caused by mites may be the issue. She checked him and didn't see mites, but wanted to be safe. I was actually quite pleased that the entire visit including, of course, walking in the door, antibiotics and stuff for the mites was all $65. I was afraid it was going to be around $150 or something. I think I am going to call the breeder and have a few words with him. The vet was right in saying that you pay the money to the breeder and you're expecting a "perfect"healthy puppy.
