How Often Do You Do Dental? Apple is coming up on her first birthday, and I had her at the Vet, yesterday, discussing the two retained upper canine teeth (and spay and such)...I asked, when he pulled the two teeth, if he would be cleaning her teeth, at the same time...He said it wasn't necessary, at this point, but that next year I would want to be having it done...Then I asked him how often yorkies need to do dental, and he said annually? Is this the norm for most yorkies? It occurred to me, if they lived to be 15, then they would be put under anesthetic 14 times??? Can that be right? |
One of the first things I read before getting Buddy was a Yorkieshire Terrior looses their teeth early. Don't remember reading about size tho, he's 16lbs. LOL Buddy will be 6 in Jan 2010. His teeth are as white as when he was a puppy. I plan on never getting a dental done on him. We brush almost every day and use petzlife weekly to keep the tartar off the teeth. He's really good about it because I started the week I brought him home. It's insane what the dental costs. $600.00 in my area. My GF just had her 9yr old Yorkie done yesterday and he has only 1/2 the teeth he's suppose to have in his mouth! Start brushing, give your pup bones to chew on and look into petzlife. Some don't like it but I wouldn't be without it. I see the benefits from using it and know it works. |
Some yorkies do need dentals every 6-12 months, but not all do. Home care is really important. When Ellie was first seen for periodontal disease, I was told that she would probably need dentals at least yearly. A different vet did her oral surgery and we have seen her ever since. It's been almost 2 years since Ellie's last dental, and she says her teeth look just fine. So it really depends on the dog and the owner. |

I think 2 years is a good age to start, and then go from there :D |
If your dog is only 1 year old, her adult teeth are just a few months old, so they should not need a cleaning. I also use Petzlife, and I'm very happy with the results. Petzlife is said to soften tartar and you brush it away later. We also use a hard bully stick that I believe helps clean tartar off teeth. I think it's important to have your dogs teeth examined yearly, but how often your dog will need a cleaning is probably related to what type of preventative program you are using. Yorkies are known to be tartar producers, so it's good to be using something, and never too early to get them use to a toothbrush! |
Hey girl!!! Snick's vet said his teeth look incredible (on Monday at his vet visit) and his molars are rocking!! I brush Snick's teeth once every 2 weeks (bath time) and I know I should do it more often, but I have to thank the raw for his teeth!! xoxo- Snick & Viv |
