How much should I be feeding my lil guy? Hi everyone, my little guy is only 4lbs. He is 2yrs old, but I have only had him since June of this year. He has changed my whole world, don't know what I did before him. It was hard for his previous owners to have to give him away.. so they have not been in contact nor do I know anything about his life before me. His previous vet has given me all his medical records, cause I had all his shots updated and he was neutered in August. But no one, including when I ask my vet, can give me a straight answer as to how much I should be feeding him? can anyone help? please? He's 2yrs old, healthy, energetic, I take him on walks at least 3x a day. He runs around the house all day playing, which by the way is so darn cute. When I got him he looked underweight to me, but my vet said you should be able to see his ribs..now I am thinking maybe I am feeding him too much, b/c his ribs aren't so prominent anymore. I dont want him to get heavy, I'm scared he will. How many treats should he be getting? and how much dry, dog food? any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much everyone!!!:confused  |
No expert here but my Tootsie is a little over 6 months old and weighs 6lbs. We free feed her~whenever her bowl is empty I fill it up!!! She is young though and very energetic as well!! Our vet told us that she is very healthy looking and there are no issues with her weight. As of now... We only give Tootsie treats when we are training~and sometimes in her pink puppy kong..We did the puppy training classes and our trainer advised us to be careful with the treats because there stomachs are so small that one or two treats a day may spoil her diet...She is sooo adorable though sometimes we can't help it~especially when we open the pantry door and she sits there patiently waiting:)!!! His advice to us was that you should not be able to see the ribs:confused:!! Also, to watch for a bloating look in her belly, if that starts to happen cut her food down... I'm sure you will find that you may get alot of different opinions~but this is works best for us for now...Good luck to you and your furbaby!! |
thanks Michelle & Tootsie this helps me a lot..have a great thursday... Dawn & Izzy :) |
You should be able to feel the ribs, but not see them. If you can see the ribs, he's too thin. My baby is 2-yrs and about 5.5 lbs- I free feed her, but her 2 cup bowl of food will last about a week. So on average she eats about 1/4-1/3 cup daily. Each dog is going to be different though, so you'll have to find what works for your baby. What are you currently feeding him? |
The amount of food you feed depends upon the TYPE of food you feed. Higher quality food vs. lower quality. :) It is not just about the age or weight of the dog. |
My 2 1/2 pound dog eats less than 1/4 cup of Wellness a day. We feed him in the morning and leave the food out for about 20 minutes and the same in the evening. He is really a picky eater and is extremely skinny. He does eat the Wellness but doesn't eat the entire bowl even when there is just a little bit. I give him PB in a kong once or twice a week because he is so skinny. As far as treats he actually likes carrots (even though he is insanely picky!) I also got a 1# bag of Merrick Grammy's Pot Pie and he eats the kibble as treats. Hope this helps. |
