Which is more serious......

Toby is 7 months.

My vet has recommended not neutering him until he's about 1 year old, to ensure he is fully developed/matured, and that his growth isnt stunted.
He also has an undescended testicle, which makes the procedure more complicated. While the vet says that its unlikely to drop now, his breeder said that Yorkies can be slow, and not to rush into anything, and it may drop, and become a more simple operation.

He also has some baby teeth left, and the vet recommended that if they hadnt come out by 7 months, that they would need taken out.
I can get a quick brush of them, but I can see food stuck between one of his baby and adult teeth. I cant get him to sit long enough to get this out with the brush, and am worried about it rotting his teeth.

So are the teeth ok waiting another 5 months??

I lost Millie from her spay, so I want to avoid any unnecessary surgery/anesthesia.

Thanks

It is okay to wait. My Wylie was cryptorchid, and his never descended. Make sure your surgeon is *very* adept at these types of surgeries - bc Wylie's was not done well. Both my boys weren't neutered until about 10 mths old (Marcel bc he was a tiny).

The problem you might have w/ waiting is more marking in the meantime, but that was something I was willing to put with - bc I wanted to wait.

As for teeth, keep trying - and also you could buy CET petite chews either at ebay or Amazon (I get mine at both those places), ProDen Plaque Off powder, bully sticks. :)

I too have both these problems with my Tobias but he is going on 1 year November 1st.

I currently have him scheduled for surgery this Oct. 20th. and am wanting any additional information. I have read up on this in Wicki. and it doesn't sound good.

One thing I am upset about is the testicles should have been noticed by the time he was 3-4 months old. Why didn't the vet see this or look for it. I didn't know and now am upset. I don't see him anymore for other reasons.

I am concerned on the teeth because the longer they stay in, the bigger the permanent grow and won't it be harder on him to have them pulled?

Everywhere I go/read, in spite of what others have said, neutering is inevitable. There's also the possibility that he is sterile because of the one undescended testicle.

Anyone? Your expertise of experiences similar to ours? Help please. Soon?

My Ozzie is 9 months and also has an undescended testicle. I have waited to neuter him because he is only 4 pounds and so thin. He has had a few episodes with low blood sugar in the mornings and I am scared to death to have him go all those hours without eating. He eats very well but as soon as he eats he runs around like crazy with my other yorkie and I guess burns it all off. I would like to get him neutered so I can stop worrying about it but I'm too scared. As far as the baby teeth he is still losing them. He has one left but lost two this month with the bully sticks. I know he has to be neutered soon but I am terrified. Am I worrying too much over this? How do they monitor the blood sugar before and after surgery. The breeder says I'm being a wimp and he will be fine.

OMG! NO! He's your baby and friend. I like what Wylie's mom said. I am now going to check my vet more or call others.

You should find answers to these questions from your vet. Hopefully that will ease your mind. My baby is almost a year and isn't neutered. Yet. He doesn't mark in the house because I let him outside. He still goes pee and poop on the pee pads if he can't go out. I am very fortunate.

Do what your heart and gut says. You can have him nuetered when you're more at ease.

I just started Tobias on Nature's Variety. The local rep. and I talked. She suggested getting some of the canned and adding steamed Jasmine rice to it to help him gain back some weight. Go online and ask a question and someone in your area will contact you.

I wish you well.:lovewings

Thank you for the good info. I already give him the stinky bully sticks and the ProDen sounds like something good to use all the time.

I used to regularly have the baby teeth on my show prospects removed at 4to5 months as leaving them in can cause the adult teeth to grow in crooked. My own vet always suggests waiting until a dog or bitch is fully mature before neuturing. They will do it earlier if the owner has one of both sexes and they are worried about them mating.

Can neutering really stunt growth?

I applaud your vet for wanting to wait until your boy is a little older. Neutering males creates more long term side effects and concerns. I think waiting until they are more mature is a wise decision. Here is a good article that explains it all:

Thank you! His adult teeth are growing in straight thank goodness. It's the baby teeth that are pushing out ward a bit. I can still brush between them and never see anything caught between them.

Sorry, forgot to add: naturesvariety.com. The canned food they have is high in protein because it is mostly meat. The rice gives extra carbs to help him gain weight. They have a store locator where you put your zip code in and they'll tell you. It isn't that expensive either and they digest it better.

They are prone to low blood sugar from what I've been told. I was told to always have Nutra-cal(sp?) on hand a a couple cans of Little Ceasers dog food. If he ever acts lethargic or low on energy, the nutra cal bought in a tube, help for a quick pick me up and if he won't eat, they usually will ear Little Ceasar's. It's not a food I would give except in emergencies.

Just an FYI. If there are other suggestions from others or if I am incorrect, please give input.

PJ thanks for all the information. You made me feel like I wasn't crazy like everyone thinks. I just love my babies so much. He does eat well. I feed him about every 4 hours except at night. I always add shredded chicken or a little bit of lean beef to his food and some vegetables but I don't feed him rice a lot. I am going to take your advice and start feeding him rice more often. He was a little shaky in the morning a few times and as soon as I fed him he was ok but it really scared me. I have two yorkies and a bichon mix. The bichon mix also had an undescented testicle so the vet and I waited until he was a year old to neuter him. After I got him neutered he started marking. I don't know if he would have just done it anyway or if it was because I waited so long but he is the first dog I have ever had that did that. We have tried everything but I don't think he will ever change. He wears a belly band all the time unless he is right beside me because I can't trust him. He doesn't mind wearing it thank goodness. So that is another concern I have about waiting. Something is just holding me back though so I think I will wait some more. My puppy still hasn't raised his leg yet and I'm so glad. Does yours do that? He is pretty good about going on his pee pads but I bought the Rascal litter box and he hasn't taken to that at all.
Thanks for all your information and support.

Very interesting read....thanks for posting.

I don't really know anything about the neuter procedure, since I have a female, and have not had a male dog neutered...But Apple has two retained baby teeth (canine upper), and the Vet said it was o.k. to wait until she was a year old, then they would need to come out...She's almost a year old, and they still haven't come out...My dilemma is I really wanted to wait until she was 18 months old to have her spayed...this was just my decision based on information regarding maturity, hormones, and things like that...I remember when you lost your little one, and it was very sad...I don't think this is the norm, but a very very unfortunate incident...And it is, no doubt, an easier procedure w/a male...Some even say that if you don't mind dealing w/an unaltered male dog, it's not the end of the world...Of course, you have to make that decision...Having said all that, from what I've heard, it will be o.k. to wait another five months for those baby teeth, and, perhaps, they'll fall out by then...I know this is a tough one for you, and I just wish you all the best....
