Apple did a "skip" while walking this a.m. I posted this in sick and injured and didn't get any response, so I thought, perhaps, I might get some here...Forgive me for posting all over the place...I'm just trying to get some answers... Today is the first day that I have ever seen Apple do a "skip" on her back left leg...Of course, I'm extremely upset, but I also know I need to find out what's going on w/that, and find the very best ortho, in the area, to help me do so...I'm sure I'll have my own vet look at her, and, possibly do x-rays, but I have more trust in my YT friends in guiding me to the right surgeon, if this becomes necessary...I live between Houston and Galveston, so I'm sure someone can tell me what they know about surgeons in the Houston/Galveston area...Thanks so much, and, of course, for you praying mamas, pray for my little Apple that this isn't serious, and we can overcome it for a long, healthy and pain free life.... |

when you say "skip" do you mean that she is putting her back leg up? fiona does that from time to time, and i dont let it get to me. as long as your baby is weight bearing, eating, drinking, and acting fine you should be alright, if your really that concerned, call your vet! last year fiona was holding her back leg up, and i gave her baby aspirn and it helped, so we never went to the vet. i would just call them, and see what they suggest...good luck! :animal-pa |
Yogi has a little "hitch in his giddy-up" sometimes too. His daddy - sire - does too, so he comes by it honestly. Well come to think of it his Poppa (my DH) does sometimes too :p Dr D has checked him out throughly several times and his hips & knees are fine. I think it's rather cute, sort of like his front end isn't going fast enough to suite his backend. I wouldn't worry too much until you have it checked out. Take her in and let your vet look her over. :) |
The skip is like when she's trotting along, she skips a beat w/the left hind leg...I've never seen her do this before...she hasn't wanted to walk, here lately, but I thought it might have been the humidity, although, we walked all summer...I need to take her to the vet about two baby teeth that haven't come out, yet, so I'll be talking to him about this back left leg too...I wouldn't have even thought about this skip thing, but have seen many posts about that particular thing w/LP... |

Jaxson did it too! Jaxson had been doing this EXACT same thing ealier this year, so when I took him to the vet to get his teeth cleaned I discussed it with his vet. The staff told me its HIGHLY common in small breed dogs for some unknown reason and they get a lot of parents asking whats going on with their dogs. My vet examined Jaxson's legs and joints and said they where strong and solid and even did it when he was under for his cleaning so they could rotate it more. I stopped worrying about it. He did it for a while and now he doesn't do it anymore:rolleyes:. Maybe its a phase of something. He was 2 during this time and now he's 3 so ..... Don't freak out, talk to your vet first. If your baby isn't showing signs of pain and is just "Skippy go Lucky"... don't worry.:) |
That is a common sign of luxating patella. it is common in little dogs and many people on YT have dogs with LP. Morgan has LP in both her knees. Any "hitch in their giddy-up" should be evaluated. it means their knee cap is popping out of place and that little skip is them popping it back into place. it does hurt but the degree of pain varies per dog and situation. Morgan has grade 2/3, both her knee caps will pop out regularly. she however does not skip or kick out her knee. she has a funny walk that only i notice because i know what i'm looking for. I worked for two veterinary orthopedic surgeons. |

How do you know they "need" surgery? Max's regular vet said he has stage 2. She did not do any x-rays or recommend any supplements. Just said he needs surgery. Thanks |
