What is wrong with this yorkie please, please help I hope someone on this board can help since my mom's vet doesn't seem to want to explore the problem that my mom's yorkie has. My mom responded to an ad five years ago for a Yorkie being sold at 16 weeks because the man can no longer take care of her since his girlfriend moved out and he had to travel extensively for his job. The history was that he had purchased the pup in Brazil on a business trip. My mom knew that something was not right with Maggie after the first week but wanted to give her a loving home. She is extremely tiny. I'm thinking puppy mill and also who knows when she was taken away from her mother and siblings. After all these years she will not be held for any lenght of time . She's fine for a few seconds and then something comes over her and she struggles to escape. She will stand and face a wall and just stare at it. Sometimes when she comes in to a room my mom says it seems she doesn't recognize the room and doesn't remember how to step in. She sometimes turns around and actually backs out of the room. Her head also twitches alot. My mom's vet just says that with a dog so tiny he doesn't want to put her through the many tests to find her problem. He says she's just a very nervous dog. I and my mom know it's something more and that maybe something like medication can help. Like I said she is at most 3 pounds. I'm thinking seizures or something neurological but vet is no help. Thank you so much for your incite. My mom loves this little dog and I'm worried that she is suffering or that she will have an early death. Could this something called liver shunt? |
Absolutely. Liver shunt needs to be ruled out and not by that vet. He obviously doesn't have the knowledget o be seeing Yorkies. A three pound dog can have blood drawn and this is the first step. A blood panel and bile acids test should be done. It is not normal and it is most likely neurological. |
Backing out of a room is not all that uncommon, so I would not be concerned about that. The rest of it, yes, I would be concerned. |
Many of the symptoms you have described are evident in dogs with Liver Shunt. I would have your Mom find another vet -- one that is experienced with Yorkies and go from there. I will keep this precious little one in my thoughts and prayers. |
Hopefully with the new info you now have from member's here you will find a vet that will do the blood panel that is needed to rule out a shunt. Good luck with that and bless your Mom for taking care of this little one. Keep up updated. Finger's crossed it will be diagnosed and taken care of. |
I agree with the other members, Please have her checked for LS. prayers are with you  sometimes you have to be very persistant with your vet ;) |
possible shunt I lost a Yorkie, his name was Bear, at 12 weeks due to Liver Shunt and Hydrocephalis (water on the brain). I had bought him from a pet store (before I knew @ puppy mills). He would twitch the head alot and walk down the length of a wall until he got to the corner and his head would touch the wall, he would turn and walk until his head touched the wall again, he would just keep doing this going in a square pattern. He had a few seizures as well. We took him to the emergency vet at 1;30 am when he had the first seizure. He was there 6 days and died when he had a second seizure on day 6. I only had him three weeks and it was heartbreaking. Bear was not real small like your Mother's is but he sure had a awful time before he died. They did everything they could for him, and he was blind & deaf after the second seizure, he lived only 4 hours after the second one, despite the efforts of the hospital. It was God's way, I guess. I hope your mom's baby will be okay. |
Thank you all for replying. Elizabeth I am sorry for your loss. I have researched liver shunt and even saw a video of a yorkie with symptoms of liver shunt. But Maggie does not rub against a wall. She will just go in the corner and face the wall. She does not have any vomiting or excess thirst or urinary infections. She looks disoriented at times and like I said you can hold her for a few seconds and then something comes over her and she panics. She will never sit and cuddle on the couch with even my mom. I've had many dogs growing up and we know something is not right but two vets have dismissed it as being a puppy mill dog. She has an adorable face but her back humped a little. My mom has vet appt. next week because she needs tooth pulling again. I am going with her and will discuss all this with the vet and ask him why he thinks it's not liver shunt and ask for liver panel just to ease our minds. Thank you all again and will let you know what he says. |

Some dogs with liver shunt only have one or two symptoms and sometimes none at all. Has bloodwork ever been done? If all of it looks good, including a bile acids test, the possibility of seeing an internist is still open. Anyway, this Yorkie shouldn't not have surgery until liver issues are ruled out. Some anesthesias are very hard on liver compromised dogs. |
it could be anxiety; you can try homeopet anxiety drops or sleepytime tonic; they can maker her relaxed. good luck |

I agree with the liver shunt. Please, please get her levels checked. I lost one of my babies to this. She would just sit and stare at the walls would walk around in circles. She would also pee a lot. She would eat and not gain weight. |
I would definately look into finding a new vet. Or at least go to a vet that can refer you to a specialist. We will keep your little one in our prayers. |
My advice is find another vet. Our previous vet did not have experience with Yorkies so we needlessly dealt with minor problems that led to major ones before she did anything. I have found a wonderful vet who has lots of experience with small breeds and was able to diagnose Maddie's health problems immediatly and we were able to start treatment. I do have to drive 45 min. both ways but it is so worth it to have knowledgable vet. Good luck. Please keep updated. BTW, Ellie May has excellent advice and is very knowledgable on yorkie health. |

We were going to have our baby fixed and before they did the surgery, they ran blood tests and bile acid tests, along with an ultrasound and this all confirmed multiple liver shunts. I don't mean to scare you, I am just passing on what happen to us. I hope everything turns out well for your baby. |
