how much is too much I was just wondering how much food a day does everyone feed their babies. Mine is 5 months old and we feed him a cup of dry food a day and he eats all of it throughout the day, but he is always going to his bowl to eat even when it is empty. He still seems hungry. By the way he is 8 lbs. so I don't think he is underfed, but I feel like maybe he needs more? |
I'm a free feeder. There is always food in the bowl and they eat when they're hungry. It usually takes them about 1 1/2 days to finish the bowl and it isn't a big bowl. Mine just aren't big eaters. |
The same here. We leave food and water out all the time for ours. |
I always free feed my Yorkies . I have a food distributor . |
Try free-feeding but keeping an eye on him. Yorkies can develop blood-sugar problems like hypoglycemia. Telling us weight won't help so much because we don't know a size to go with it. For example, my pup is 17 lbs and is also not overfed, but he's probably 3x as big as yours ;) |
I feed Simon and Hallie a 1/4 cup in the morning and 1/4 cup at night. Hallie will eat when she gets bored/excited so if I leave it down all day she will eat like a little piggy and then Simon doesn't get food! Simon lets me know when he is hungry by pawing at the food bag and he needs more food so he gets snacks when he is hungry! If I could free feed I would! |
I feed Millie 1/8 Cup dry food in the morning and probably about 1/8 wet food at night. She eats it all up, but does not really ask for more and if I try to feed her more in her bowl, she will not eat more than the 1/8 cup. she is 3.3 lbs.; 5 months old. I don't free feed. Also she will get training snacks for the rest of the time. We snack train her for everything! so I know she is getting enough to eat. |
I leave 1/2 cup of dry food out for Gus all day. He will sometime finish it but others there is a little left. I feed him half of Cesars in the morning, treats throughout the day like,,,, fresh fruit, (apples, carrots, or mellons) or doggy treats. He loves Greenie bits, and any soft treats. He's not big on milk bones. And he loves cheerios!!! At dinner time if he can't have what we are having, I will give him the other half of the Cesars. I will only give Gus boiled chicken,,, (which we do eat alot of) or ground beef unseasoned. |
Maximus gets half a cup dry food split between 3 meals...he is fed 1/3 of it at breakfast, 1/3 at lunch an 1/3 at dinner...he also gets a chicken and rice stick when I leave in the morning with a tsp of plain yogurt and some gerber graduates carrots, and the same at night..sometimes I substitute for fruit!! |
Loki is 10 months and 8 pounds. He eats about 1/3-1/2 cup of dry food a day. He gets some small treats (Charlee Bears) during the day as well. I know he's had too many treats when he ignores his food for a while! He does not eat throughout the day, even if I leave food down. When he was a baby I split his meal in half - morning and evening. He was never interested in an afternoon meal. Now I only feed him in the evening. He likes to eat when we eat dinner. He doesnt always finish it all, either. He is skinny (and long and tall) and I know he is at a healthy weight. We have never had a problem with hypoglycemia. It also depends on what food you feed. A better quality food will have less filler and therefore you will feed less (and have less poop). Your pup will also feel more full longer. Some of those brands are: Wellness, Innova, Natural Balance Ultra Premium, Canidae, California Natural... Keep that in mind when comparing amounts. Also, do not go by the amount on the bag of food. Those amounts are there as a guideline and also so sell more dog food :-) |
Ok, so I am the nutcase here. I free feed my three. Chizzie lives to eat, so I don't worry about her. Peppy and Chattie eat to live and since I tend to be a worrywart.....every evening right before bed I HAND feed Chattie and Peppy. It probably isn't necessary, but it is some great bonding time and we all enjoy the time together. I feed Innova EVO. It is such a GREAT food, I drive almost 60 miles (one way) to buy it. |

I leave food & of course fresh water out all the time. We have 3 dogs inside and they all eat at different times. Never had any problems with any being overweight, but if I do I will have to change the way things are done. He may just want to eat as a comfort thing. |
how much to feed my vet told me to feed aprox. 1 tablespoon per pound of puppy weight, so what does eight tablespoons add up to?haha my chewie weighs about 3 lbs and i give him about 3tablespoons in the morning and at dinner and at bedtime but he doesn't really eat too much at bedtime. (he is 4 months old) |
I just asked the same question earlier. My yorkie ( Sadie) is 13 weeks old and weighs 3 1/2 pounds. She eats 1/3 to 1/2 cup of dry food twice a day. With a spoonful of wet food mixed in. I tried cutting her back and she started looking for food and acting like she was starved. I feed her Beneful dry and Pedigree wet. Plus she gets small pieces of snacks when she potties out side. Water is always available. Am I doing this right? I have always had Golden Retrievers and they eat alot. |
I free feed my dogs also. I give them lil caesars as a snack in the morning. |

I actually started splitting up his feeding to a 1/2 cup in the morning and a 1/2 a cup at dinnertime. I would like him to get used to eating at those times so that hopefully his potty times will be a little after he eats instead of throughout the day, all day long. He usually poops at least 5 times a day, and he is fed Chicken Soup and sometimes Nutro Lamb and Rice. We'll see how this works. |
