Meat tenderizer??
 
Okay, so we've been having some issues with Reesie eating his poop, so I started putting meat tenderizer on his food and now he is not eating his food very well. I got the unseasoned type so I didn't think that he would be able to tell, but maybe I'm using too much. I've used about 1/8 of a teaspoon. How much should I be using? Just a sprinkle?

Unfortunately, even many of the unseasoned meat tenderizers have too much salt, I think a better choice is canned pineapple. The pineapple contains the same ingredient most meat tenderizes use, an enzyme called bromelain. This acts to predigest meat and make it easier for the dog to digest so that no undigested protein is left in food, this is usually the reason dogs eat it. There are other reasons though, such as boredom and in that case pineapple or meat tenderizers won't help. You can use canned, and you give about a one-inch chunk, from what I've read. I think I would try hand feeding the first few times, they are more likely to try something if given by hand. Sometimes, changing to a food with an easier to digest protein helps.

I should ask how old your dog is, if he's very young eating poop is considered fairly normal, as mothers do this to clean their babies. I would just keep his kennel as clean as possible, and try to learn his pooping schedule. I'm not sure you want to experiment much with food on a young puppy.

Thanks for your response Nancy. He is only 11 weeks old. I feel bad that I gave him that stuff now. I did not even think about there being salt in it. I should have tasted it first!!!:( I will have to try the pineapple. Thanks again for your response!:)

Oh that is young, I didn't even have Joey till 12 weeks, and I know their tummy's get upset very easily. He'll probably outgrow this without you doing much of anything, a dog 6 months old shouldn't be eating his poop, but I doubt if it's that unusual for an 11 week old. If you do try the pineapple, give just a small amount the first day, and gradually increase it to a 1 inch square, the slower you add new foods the less tummy upsets.

I'm not sure but I think I remember that you are supposed to put the meat tenderizer on the poop not the food to get them to not eat it. That could be why he isn't eating his food. :D I've never done that because I figured if I could put meat tenderizer on it, I could just pick it up. I have used pineapple though. Unfortunately Sadie didn't like pineapple either.

No, you don't sprinkle this on their poop, some people have suggested sprinkling "hot sauce" while others say, their dogs really loved the hot sauce. :rolleyes: If you actually see poop, instead of sprinkling anything on it, the best thing to do is remove the poop, sometimes puppy will eat it out of boredom. Also, many people recommend free feeding a puppy, so that it doesn't get overly hungry. There are also interactive toys that you can put bits of food in, and the puppy can gradually get food out, keeping it interested for longer periods. Oops - meat tenderizer - food; hot sauce - poop. Got it! In any case, my thought is if I can put something on it, I can pick it up. Sadie has pretty much outgrown this now. Also, we changed her food to a higher quality food with less grain and that seemed to help also.

Lol, that's what I always thought too, just get rid of the poop, end of problem! By the way, the higher quality food might have an easier to digest protein too. If dogs can smell undigested protein, they want to eat it, they don't care if it's in the form of poop!

I don't think he is eating it out of boredom. He will poop and turn right around and try to eat it right then. Also, he goes through the yard on a mission looking for it, if there is any that did not get picked up he will go for it, so I have to watch him like a hawk when he goes out. The other day he kept pulling on his leash to go over to one side of the yard. Once we got there I saw a pile of poop that was not his and he was trying like a mad dog to get at it. The bad thing is, I think it is racoon poop. I saw a racoon in our yard the other day!!!:eek: He was also trying to get at some rabbit poop today! I'm going to have to try the pineapple and hope he grows out of this soon. I can understand him eating his poop, but I can not tolerate him eating other animal poop. I'm going to be talking this over with his vet tomorrow!!:confused:

What did you change to, if I may ask?? :) We are using Blue Buffalo puppy. I thought it was suppose to be a good food, but now I'm wondering.:confused:

I've heard that they really love eating cat's poop too, and this is a real delicacy for them, I imagine because cats are fed high protein food. Joey never went for his own poop, but if he finds any duck poop he'll gobble it right up, so we try to keep him away from that. :D
