Your Opinion Please/spaying I took Cissy to the vet today for her final puppy shots (4 months old). I asked about spaying/microchip and the Vet says she will do it next month when I bring her in to weigh again (for heartworm preventive). When I asked about the teeth situation (reading here it's best to do at once), the vet states it's just up to me when to do the spay but she prefers to do it before first heat, but Cissy still has all her puppy teeth and the vet says everything looks good (- no loss yet). Ok - now it's up to me "when" to do this. What are your opinions??? I'm not sure what to do but want to do what is best for Cissy. Also, is there anything preventive that I can do to make Cissy's comfort level less tramatic after her Rabies shot? Have read some of the remarks regarding babies after that shot. Just checking to see if I can do something to help her with the process! Thanks in advance for your knowledge and answers. |
I was told its best to spay before the first heat as the chance of cancers is far far less. Like you said the chances of teeth being pulled at 6 months could be unlikely so its a lose lose situation. In Tias case she was spayed before her first heat at 6 months and therefore no teeth needed extracting. Now at 15 months she still has one baby tooth left , a canine ,but had it checked today (at her first annual booster) and the vet said it looks ok and to keep brushing it should come out on its own. So he decision is yours but I would spay before the first heat.:D |

i had morgan spayed at 6 months with baby teeth extractions. small dogs usually don't go into heat until at least 8 months so waiting til they have most of their adult teeth is ok. this way you can get the spay and teeth extraction done at the same time. |
I just got my dog spayed last week, she is six months old. My vet had told me to bring her in for spaying around 6 months. They pulled five baby teeth while they had her asleep. The extractions haven't seemed to bother her at all. I have read that it's more dangerous to anesthesize small dogs, so I think they wanted to avoid doing that again. |

My vet is not good at answering questions - she gets a little rushed, putting it nicely. I could almost hear her "sigh" when I said - "well, I read......." yada, yada...... What's a mother to do???? :p |
