Habit or allergy? After eating, Prince will chew on one of his paws. He has done this for quite a while and his vet said it might be an allergy. My husband and I think it is a habit. He nibbles a lot and goes from one paw to the other. I checkd his front paws, and no fur is missing, nor is it irritated. What do you think? He eats Solid Gold and Blue Buffalo. (Oh, sometimes he will nibble on my or my husband's finger, as well.) |
Sophie did this exact same thing for a while. Thinking it was a habit, we distracted her each time and/or corrected her because we didn't want her to think it was ok to nibble/chew on our fingers. She doesn't do it anymore, so I guess it was a habit? Same thing though, no missing fur, etc. |
:confused:Sophie's mom, thank you. It does seem like a habit. The only way he'll stop is if we distract him, but then he'll go back to it. |
Just like everything else with our babies, it takes persistence! Hang in there! (Guess that just gives you more time for hugs & belly rubs!!!) LOL! |
I would assume allergy before habit. If after you treat for allergy (long process, have to figure out what it is first) he is still doing it, then I'd think habit. But, chewing/licking paw is considered *the* telltale sign that an allergy is occurring. Instead of coughing or sneezing like a human might do - their paw itch are feel very irritated to them, so they bite/lick them to try and feel better. |
morgan nibbles on the tops of her front paws too. she's eaten many different foods over her 3 years, and even raw, and she's still done it. she'll stop when i tell her to. no redness on her paws, no smell, no signs of infections, no hair loss...nothing. i think its a habit for her. she only nibbles the tops of her paw. not her toes or the underside. |
