Switched to innovo EVO--- still itching? Why? hi all- can anyone please give me advice on why Maxwell continues to itch/scratch like mad? When I adopted him on July 24 his previous owner gave me Nature's Recipe. That is the food they had him on... it was good since it didn't have corn and all that other stuff- but not the best. I switched his food to EVO and snacks to Wellness (no grain) thinking it would stop him from itching. However, he continues to itch??? He doesn't have ticks or fleas. What am I doing wrong. I feel so sorry for him. He has been on EVO for about 1 week. When I made the change he had diarrehea/vomit for 2-3 days, then one week of bland diet (chicken and white rice). I then slowly mixed the EVO into his bland diet and now he is fully on EVO. can anyone help us? Cheers! |
Evo can be too rich for some dogs and may not be the best food for him. It takes 2-3 months for the old food to totally be out of the system, so you may not see results until then. It actually may get worse before it gets better. Are you sure it's food allergies though? 90% of the time, it is environmental. |
I switched from Evo to Wellness super 5 mix because of the high protein count in Evo. Evo has 42% and Wellness has 22% some Yorkies don't do well with a high level. |

he may be allergic to the protien source in the food, its not always the grains in pet foods that cause allergies. My dogs cant have beef... it makes them itch, thier eyes tear and they get really smelly, Ive seen on here that some dogs cant have chicken etc. I would suggest changing to a food that has either duck,rabbit,venison to rule out an allergy to a "normal" protien source. Then go from there. EVO is very high in protien and your dog may continue to have issues with it. None of my 4 dogs can tolerate a high protein diet. I have my dogs on Merrick, its a great food with premuium ingredients not super high in protien. My dogs are thriving and no longer itching. I would also suggest adding omega 3's to his diet, to help with his dry skin and itching. I use Ark naturals royal coat express (recommended on here) for both my dogs and cats and they all look great, thier coats are shiny and soft and my cats quit shedding so much. It has also worked miracles for my dads dog who also had a huge itching problem. Good luck, I hope you can get his itching under control.. |
I would not do a hard switch. I had a Lhasa Poo that had fall allergies till she got older. Are you sure it's the food and not something in the air? We knew it was allergies with the Lhasa Poo because it was every fall she would chew one of her back legs so bad we had to bandage it and put her on steroids. It lasted a few weeks then she was fine till the following year. As she got older it stopped but it happened for several years. |

it could be mites that would need to be scraped for to determine! also my vet said that dogs are getting allergies this time of year and to give 1 ml of children's bendryl per day to help with allergies. |
Where is the dog itchy? It could be a contact allergy to grass, carpet fibers, etc. |
Allergies can be a tough thing to tackle. Sometimes it's not about the food but about the environment. This means that wall-to-wall carpeting, dust and things like grass can aggravate and cause itchiness. My dog Biscuit has this problem. Sometimes he can't really go outside and be in the grass because he might come down with a bacterial skin infection from all the scratching. It's very hot and humid where we live, so the weather might also be something to consider. For now we've switched him to Natural Balance to see if that might help him. Like others have said, it'll take a while before you start to see improvements on a new food. I've also been wanting to get some skin scrapings to determine what exactly is going on, so that's also something you can look into. I hope you're able to manage the itchiness. It's tough watching them scratch so much. |
