Neutering questions? Hi All, I have a question. I wanted to get Maxi neutered this month (he will be 5 1/2 months old on Oct 21 and he is about 5 pounds). Do you think that is okay or should I wait until he weighs more? Also, I called a couple of vets and they are saying that they give the gas plus the shot to keep them under and that they do pre-blood work tests plus they send him home with pills and meds....now we are more hollistic in our medical approach and this seems like alot of stuff for such a tiny dog. Is this the normal procedure? Im just not sure what to expect and Im really sacred to do this. Plus some places I called want to keep him overnight? Is that normal too? I think he will be really scared to do that. Please help, Im a nervous mommy! Thanks! :) |

I had Bra'Tac's done at almost 6 months, and about 5lbs. He went through it fine. My vet also did pre-blood work to make sure there were no outstanding issues. Also, if your vet will do laser surgery instead of scalpel, I would suggest it wholeheartedly. Not only do they not have all the inflammation that is associated with a scalpel procedure, but they also heal quicker and there seems to be less pain afterwards. It cost me a little extra, however it was well worth it. Bra'Tac never even seemed to lick at it, and was up and about, without much pain meds, quickly. As for anesthesia, the doctor was right there monitoring him, and said he did fine. I trust the vet that I have now, so that is a big load off my mind when my pups have to have any procedure. |

I am really worried so that you so much for the support, I really appreciate it. I was quoted between 350-450 for pricing.. does that sound normal? |

Seems a bit high to me... Tyler just had his done Monday and his was about $252.... that was just because he needed a round of shots first and had a tooth pulled. But he's 5lbs so I don't see any problem with the weight. He wasn't sent home with any meds either and I don't think he needed them. And I missed Tyler since he had to stay overnight but it's just precaution (: He'll be home in no time :D Good luck! |

If you are planning on having him microchipped it is a very good idea to have it done at the time of the neuter. I totally forgot to ask about it when I had Dbug and Bog done but I highly recommend getting the chipping. At our local PAWS, they have spay and neuter program and the certificate is only $65. My vet was on that list so I purchased the certificates through PAWS and then made my appointment with my vet. It is the exact same surgery, same gas, and best of all it was my own vet that did the procedure. If you are checking around anyway and have not settled on a vet you might want to check into Spay/Neuter programs in your area. Even if you purchase just the ceritficate and you pay for the extra blood work and pain meds I'm sure you would be able to save a significant amount of money. There are a lot of very wonderful vets out there that support rescue and Spay/Neuter programs that work with progams like mine does. |
I know that prices vary in different parts of the country. That seems a little higher than what I pay here in GA. My vet will spay/neuter for me with a pup at 16 weeks and at least 2 lbs. They use Sevoflurane and always ask if I want them to do Pre-surgical blood work. They don't give me an option on the Bordetella nasal drops and I know that doesn't even become effective for a few days. They ask about pain meds and I always say if needed although it's been my experience that the younger ones usually don't need the pain meds. Unless there's an undecended testicle the incision is very tiny and they are bouncing around the same evening. They don't even lick it. As they get older it becomes a different story and they seem to have more pain and lick, lick, lick. My concerns about leaving them overnight is there isn't anyone there after they close except for a tech that is suppose to come and check on the animals around 11PM. Using the Iso or Sevoflurane allows the vet to bring the animal around much faster without long term drowsiness and I've always felt having my post-surgical pups with me was better than leaving them wondering where they are and alone.
