I have never really heard of allergies in dogs until it has been posted here on Yt...
I am going to do some research on this, I want to find out if this is genitic. Is this passed on or is it just something that some dogs will get.

We see a Vet Derm and I'm rather surprised that if you're seeing a Derm too, Atopica hasn't at least been mentioned. At first it is more expensive bc you give it every day - then *most* dogs can proceed to a maintenance dose of 2-3x per week (much more affordable:)). At my Derm's office, it is $25 for 15 pills.

Marcel is currently being dosed 3xweek. When we first started w/ him, I saw relief w/in 8 days, it was unreal. His main symptom was paw chewing/licking - and I'd say it went from an 8/10 - to now at 1-2/10. He used to wake up at 1am to chew his paws :(.
Thanks for the info. When i looked it up, the price for 15 pills was $80-90 at 1800petmeds. $25 isn't so bad. Like i said, she will have to go to the dermo in the next few months for a check up, so i am definately ask about the Atopica!!! What would i do without you guys!?!?!?!

Hes still scratching, so I called the vet to get a new antihistamine and hopefully this one will work. He's been scratching all day and rubbing up against stuff to scratch his back. I hope the vet knows what he is doing :(

Has anyone ever had the vet wrongfully diagnose allergies? The vet said he has allergies but the medicine isn't working at all. I switched from claritin to a new brand and he's stil constantly scratching. Maybe it's something else?

Mine did. He said it was a flea allergy but he ended up doing a skin scrape after he meds werent working and it ended up being mites

I forgot where he is scratching (will have to reread this thread tomorrow), but antihistamines don't work in a lot of cases. If the vet thinks it's food allergies, the current food needs to be switched and steroids may need to be given. If the vet thinks it's environmental, Atopica should be tried if his bloodwork is good. While waiting for the Atopica to take affect, steroids can be given at the same time.

I feel like he's getting worse. He's scratching all over, doing the tummy crawl, rolling around on his back, biting his back and biting his legs. :( Sometimes he kind of whines as he's scratching make me so sad.

What med are you using/have you tried? He sounds miserable. If this is enviro, I'd recommend moving to Temaril-P or steroids or Atopica. Read what Crystal says above....I agree. Poor guy.

If he were mine, I would go to the vet today and get a steroid injection (Vetalog or something that lasts a few days). If it works (you will know within 24-48 hours max), then I'd do what I said on my last post because if steroids help, allergies is a huge possibility. If it does not work, it may be time to look at other causes.

He was on claritin for a couple weeks and it didn't work so now I'm using hydroxyzine and it was kind of pricey (45 for 40 pills that are given twice a day) and I was hoping it would work, but I think its working less than the claritin. I'm going to make another appointment and see about steroids or other options.

Okay...but first...has it really been determined whether this is due to food or enviro/seasonal?

Has his skin been examined all over, very close, to see if there are any areas that need further testing (bacteria, fungus)?

What are you feeding?

He thinks its environmental because he has never had any reaction to any food before. I feed Eukanuba along with home cooked, usually boiled chicken or lean ground beef with multi-vitamin. Its what I've been feeding him since switching from the breeder food.

I don't really understand what your vet means by that as all allergies appear "suddenly", even though you've never had a reaction appear before...it's no different w/ food.

I would get him off the Euk. asap. Allergy dogs, whether food or enviro, should be on a grain free diet, if at all possible. Beef and chicken allergies are the most common meat allergies, btw. Even though his allergies are likely enviro, I'd highly recommend a different kibble - where do you get your food? Petco sells Solid Gold Barking at The Moon - that'd be my first thought. Or, Wellness CORE.

Food allergies are often acquired from too much exposure to a certain ingredient. Not sure where your vet is coming from on this one...

Sorry those weren't his exact words, but what I inferred. He asked had I switched his food and I said no then he asked me had I moved recently and I said yes and it started about the time I moved. He mentioned some things about the time of year for allergies. So I'm assuming he thinks its environmental. He didn't really go into much detail about it at all, just gave me a handout about dog allergies.
