Inhaling her Food WAAAYYYYY to fast Recently, we adopted a 12 week old girl. She was not fed on a schedule and some days may have been overfed or not fed at all by her previous owners.:( She is adapting well except she seems to have food aggression. She eats her food extremely fast, doesn't chew it at all, and always seems hungry. She has been with us for a little over 2 months and has received a clean bill of health from the vet. I have to feed her and Maddie, my original girl, seperatly b/c she will eat her food and take over Maddie's bowl. I don't know what to do. I thought maybe after having her on a schedule she would get better, but she is not. Is this a problem that I can fix? |
Don't where I read this but a couple of thing come to mind. Put their food in something like a Kong where they have to work to get it or put some large stones (too large for them to swallow) in the dish with their food. This forces them to eat more slowly around the stones to get at their food. Hopefully, some other members will have other suggestions. |
Thank you for such aquick response. When I read stones, I immediatly thought of all the sticks, rocks or whatever I've dug out of her mouth. But I get what your saying! LOL Thanks. |
there is a bowl called the brake-fast bowl that has pegs in it which makes them eat slower because they have to eat around the pegs. or you can put a rock in the bowl so that have to eat around that. You can also get a toy that you have to stuff the food in so they need to work to get the food out piece by piece like the tug-a-jug. sometimes you can try everything and nothing will get them to slow down. i have a friend with a chihuahua that inhales her food and then will eat anybody elses food around her. no matter what we tried to get her to slow down it didn't work. she still inhales her food. you could also try soaking the food in water so its soft. or feeding tiny amounts more frequently. |
:thumbup:Thanks so much! We are ready to try anything. I think she is eating so much so fast I don't know that she is getting the full feeling. ???? |
I think it is also important to teach her to sit before you give her the food. It helps with food aggression issues; she must know that you not she. is in charge of all food. Dogs can learn this very fast, all you do is teach them to sit, and have them stay until you give the release command. You keep picking the bowl up, until they stay, sometimes I've had to hold back a few younger puppies, and the release command is given very fast, but they catch on in a couple of feedings. At this age, many people recommend free feeding, and this means just giving them as much as they want all day long, however, if she has a food issue this might not work, and she may need to be fed more often than the twice a day feedings of an adult dog. Best of luck with her, and I'm so glad she is in a good safe place now. |
My little Jada is exactly like this when she eats too. I tried a bowl with the big hump thing in the middle and that didn't work. My DIL is a vet tech and she suggested the rock thing in her bowl just yesterday. I haven't tried it yet but I am gonna try it today. I have made her sit and fed her a piece at a time to get her to slow down. She does ok when I do that, but I don't want her to get in the habit of being hand fed. |
you can try sitting next to her; and removing the bowl every 5 seconds or so to give her more time to chew. however, i am happy that she has an appetite; i have to beg my dog and do tricks for her to eat her food; it takes me over 30 minutes to get her to eat her food :) |
She is fed 3 times a day, plus, if I forget to pick up Maddie bowl, she gobbles hers down almost before I can get to her. I have NEVER seen anything eat this fast. She does not chew. I have tried giving her small amounts, a piece or two, at a time, nothing different. I tried hand feeding her and ended up with almost bloody finger tips.:( I have no idea what to do. I would free feed, but I am not sure how much she would eat. When I got her, her belly was swollen and so was her anus. Bless her little heart, she will be the end of me. |

They have dog bowls (this is just one - google for more) that help slow down a dogs eating habits: Dog Bowl – The Eat Better™ Dog Bowl – The Dapper Pet Store |
I know how very  you can get when you see them gobble up their food so fast... I've been struggling with this too! I switched Biscuit to a higher quality food and it has curbed his appetite. I also make him sit down before any meals or treats. It seems to be working (slowly but surely). I agree with what others have said: Don't hand feed. My mother did that for a while and it took Biscuit some time before he started to eat from his bowl again. Good luck! |
My little Chewy has done this his whole life. I put a small glass dish (like one you would make a pudding or gelatin in) upside down in Chewy's normal dish. Then I poured in his kibble, and it fell in and all around the upside down bowl. This is much more difficult for them to eat and get at the kibble, they have to work for it...and its cheap and easy and made with things from the home. It worked perfectly and no more regurgitating for Chewy who gobbled his food then drank water. This slowed him down to a perfect pace. Good luck! |

I have one of these for my Pommie who inhales his food. It doesn't stop him. I bought the smallest one that's available but I feel that it is not small enough. Wish they came smaller. I've taught him to sit until I tell him he can eat but that hasn't stopped him from gobbling it up without chewing. It worries me silly. Will be trying some of the other ideas that have been suggested. Thanks. ~Joanne~ |
I feed one dog at a time as well because if my bullie finishes her food she will push Lola out of the way to eat her food. She is always hungry and always looking for food. Yesterday I gave them each a chicken drumstick and she nearly gave me a heart attack because she took like three bites and it was gone  |
We have one of those slow feeder bowls for Cosmo as he just enhales his food. I guess I don' mind so much as picky Miss Izzy I have to beg and pray that she eats each meal. She has pancreatitis/SIBO/IBD and when she doesn't eat that's not good. Plus she is tiny. So what I say be very thankful that you have dogs that want to eat like Cosmo!!:D I also have them both sit and stay before getting their food and use our release word but he still goes to town on his food. I've heard that some dogs get bloat so bad they can die from eating so fast and these bowls were supposed to help. If you watch the video it only slows them down by 10-30 seconds or so from not using the special bowl but they say that's enough to help with not getting bloat. I'm just thankful this dog LOVES his food vs. picky Izzy. |

i have a picky dog too; and i have to revolve my whole day around her so she can eat; what are you feeing izzy by the way. i am currently feed the honest kitchen; but someone has recommended Nature's Variety Raw Medallions and i am doing some reading about it; it seems interesting; but i am not sure if i should switch or if it will be safe for my dog; since she has severe gastritis and she gets upset stomach easily. any advice anyone? thanks |
You can place a rubber ball in the middle of her food bowl -- the ball moves around and stops her from gobbling up her food. |

I am going to try putting something in her bowl, although I have my doubts. She usually dives at her bowl so hard it turns over, the food goes everywhere. She eats in her crate and food gets all in her blaket, she digs like mad to eat each piece. I dont know... THanks for all the suggestions, I am always open to suggestions. |
I am fostering a puppy who does this. I bought the Brake-Fast bowl after a rescue buddy of mine suggested it. It is wonderful! I had tried a ball in the bowl and she just took it out and started snorting her food again! I bought mine from a person on Ebay...very reasonable compared to the prices I found online....and shipping was included: BRAKE FAST BOWL Dish Stops Dog from eating food fast SM - eBay (item 130325696567 end time Oct-17-09 12:07:23 PDT) Super prompt shipping....and she has 100% feedback! Oh...and that bowl does not tip over! I am so impressed with it! Has slowed Isabella down! |

It was whole pieces of green beans and her kibble so she didn't even chew her food just swallowed it whole..this is just too scary.I got mine from amazon 14.99 and no shipping. |
