Sometimes, but not always, the breasts will swell slightly. This can also be a sign of a phantom pregnancy, when a female may begin to show signs of being pregnant even if she's not, so watch if this happens, but it usually resolves itself in a few weeks after the cycle ends. Males are great early warning detectors and can smell the change in a female's hormones before she fully comes into heat. The vulva can show some swelling, but it is quite variable, some girls hardly swell at all, while others swell up like a golf ball. Tail flagging is another sign. When a female is ready to be bred, she'll usually stand quite still while the male investigates her vulva, holding her own tail up and wagging it side to side to make sure he gets the scent. Blood discharge is usually the biggest indicator, with a pinkish red colored discharge the first week, usually turning to a tannish color during the fertile period, and changing back to a reddish color before gradually stopping altogether. Some females keep themselves extremely clean, and it may be difficult to tell if they are in season at all Are you going to spay her? You can get a belly band to stop the blood from getting everywhere.. They sell them at petsmart |
It's not a belly band you'll need...you can buy panties w/ a piece of panty liner. |
I do not want to spay her because we are thinking of breeding her. I noticed that her Vulva is swollen and she is licking it alot. No other signs, Thanks for info i will go get a band today. :) |
Im confussed now whats the diffence? |

Apple had her first heat in August...I have pillows all around the couch (it's in the middle of the room) and I noticed little brown spots on the pillow slips the first week of August, but no swelling of the vulva or licking...Then the 2nd week of August, she started bleeding pink/red...it wasn't a whole lot, but enough to be noticeable...This went on for about a week and her little "whistle" swole up so bad, it hurt me to look at it:(...Then she didn't bleed for about a week and was on the hunt, when we went for her walk...Then after about 3 weeks, she spotted brown for a few days and then, thank the good Lord, it was over...She almost drove me nuts when we went on walks...She had to pee on every bush, tree, shrub, fire hydrant, blade of grass...I was going to try to let her have two heats, before I got her spayed, but I'm not so sure now  |

We also have a male....was unaltered as well. It took much less than the 3 weeks of her cycle to make it clear, they were both going to be fixed, or I ws jumping off the house. :D We used the panty with the liners. Usually, we could usually get away with cutting them in half during the day, but at night, a full one. And we still little messes here and there. Luckily we borrowed the panty from a friend. Even if we weren't having to deal with the male (are we really that bad? Geesh :p ) just her discomfort in that diaper was hard enough......for 3 weeks. Watch close because the bleeding will just happen. My wife was wearing a white shirt, holding Sophie, when we found she actually started. |
Panties with panty liners are great to protect your furniture from those lil mishaps. However, in my experience, yorkies usually don't have a lot of bloody show.... If you have an intact male dog in your home, belly bands and panty liners will not keep them from breeding. The desire is just to great. The only way to prevent any oops or unplanned breeding is to keep them seperated. Better yet, send your boy to a friends house, for his sanity. |
You can miss the heat pretty easily if not really watching. The enlarged Vulva is a pretty sure sign. Sometimes they are so good a cleaning themselves, you will not even see blood. Some people call it a silent heat. Have to watch if you have any other males dogs in the house. If you do, the males will tell you when she is in, for sure. :D |
