Here is my big Orijen issue... Eva switched to Orijen puppy and it was great. We bought a trial size bag first. She had firm dark links, clean bum, awesome. So we bought the next size up same variety. Within 2 days, she had soft serve and some even runnier. Went to the vet to run another parasite test(she had had Giardia 3weeks prior) I figured since we didn't change the food it wasn't that. Parasite test was fine so vet put her on acute care paste to replace her flora in case the antibiotics messed her up(the paste didn't help if anything it got worse). So I decided to check the ingredients on both bags of food, the trial size and the medium size. OMG they are different. The trial size had some corn half way down the list and no pumpkin, the Medium bag had no corn and did have pumkin instead. WHAT??? I go back to the store and check the bags, the trial size and the large bags are the same, the medium are different. Ok, bought another trial size(just in case) and a large size bag, both with the original ingrediants of corn and no pumpkin. I put her right back fully on the new trial bag and the next day her perfect little links were back. I have yet to open the large bag but the ingredients are the same so we'll see. Once I realized, I checked the kibble carefully and the trial size were slightly darker and slightly smaller than the medium size. They also smelled slightly different. Separately I wouldn't have been sure there was a difference. So, emailed the company with all this about 4 days ago but have not heard back(figures). So now with any food when buying a larger size of the SAME flippin thing, I will read every single ingredient. thanks for reading, I feel vented now |
I thought Orijen was supposed to be grain free? It shouldn't have corn in it at all. I use the 6 fish formula for Sophie and she's done fine with it. Let us know what the company says! |
What product were you using? I just looked through every ingredient of every product on their site and there is no corn in any of them. Orijen Pet Foods: Products I've got 4 bags of trial size puppy in my cabinet and none of them have corn listed on the ingredients? |

A while back when I was researching this food I remember coming across a lot of complaints that they used that term as though to not make it obvious. So if your package has pumpkin in it, it won't have zea mays, if there is no pumpkin it should list zea mays about half way down the ingredients. |
Q: WHAT IS ZEA MAYS and WHY IS IT IN ORIJEN? A: The Zea Mays in ORIJEN is CORN SILK which is actually classified as an herb or botanical – not a grain. Corn Silk is NOT made from grain but rather from filaments from the flowers of female corn plant. This costly botanical features Maizenic Acid as an active ingredient and is formulated in ORIJEN diets at 300mg/kg. As corn silk does not contain corn starch or corn protein it poses absolutely no risk to dogs that may have corn allergies. Corn silk is used to treat urinary tract infections and kidney stones and is regarded as a soothing diuretic useful for any irritation of the urinary system (a common health problem in today’s companion dogs and cats). As corn silk is used as a kidney remedy and in the regulation of fluids, this herb is believed to be helpful in treating high blood pressure and water retention. As a well known herbal remedy, corn silk is used to treat urinary conditions in countries including the United Sates, China, Haiti, Turkey, and Trinidad. Furthermore, in China, corn silk as a component in an herbal formula is used to treat diabetes." |
Interesting.. I have 4 bags of the trail size sitting here and have not tried it yet tho... so will watch the info that comes in.. I would not think pumpkin would be a bad thing???? for many of us use pumpkin if our babies have the poops... so if I need to learn something about pumpkin I do not know.. I would love to hear more.. anne |

I am going to email the company again and look for a number to call on their website. |

Where did you find this info? Is this off their website? I am going to go look. I found this definition, Dictionary entry overview: What does Zea mays mean? • ZEA MAYS (noun) The noun ZEA MAYS has 1 sense: 1. tall annual cereal grass bearing kernels on large ears: widely cultivated in America in many varieties; the principal cereal in Mexico and Central and South America since pre-Columbian times |
look at this http://www.orijen.se/zeamays.pdf |
The six fish uses pumpkin, so I guess it doesn't have the other product in it. |
This came up I think about a year ago too - and there was a large outcry to Orijen from their vendors and from customers - and then Orijen released a statement that bc of the response from customers, they were removing Zea Mays from its formulas. Do you have an old bag or anything? They did say, I think, it'd take about 6 months to see new labels and everything...but this is weird. I don't know why you'd see it in there again... |
Perhaps the store that you got it from had old stock? I've looked through all the ingredient lists of the products and zea mays is not listed in any of them. Pumpkin is however listed in all of them. |
You know that was my first thought, so I checked the dates and lot numbers on the bags ...the ones with Zea Mays did have slightly older dates but only by a couple months. You think they would write New Formula! on the bag or something. Bouts of soft serve are a real mess to clean up. So the pumpkin one is the new one, then it seems I will have to find a new food. Even the adult bags had different ingredients so I guess they took it out of both. Too bad, if corn silk is helpful to them it should have been left in. Why not just say corn silk in the ingredients, still seems like they were trying to hide it or have it go unnoticed. |
Update Someone did finally call me, then they sent me a bunch of samples to try of Acana their other food. They told me that they did change the meat amounts as well as adding pumpkin. It made the food richer. Eva doesn't like it as much and it is runny poop every time I try the new recipe. So she is on old trial bags as I switch her to something else. The lady I spoke to was very pleasant and they did courier the samples the very next day. I will probably try the Acana, she sent me enough. I started a post asking if anyone had used it before, so hoping to get some opinions on it. |
