Orijen VS Acana I am thinking of switching Polo's food currently he is on Natural Balance Potato and Duck, and is doing well on it but I have to mix in chicken or eggs to get him to eat it. So my choices are Orijen or Acana? which one do you think will be better?? Does Acana have lower protein content then Orijen? do your dogs actually eat this food well? (and not pick at it) Is it true that high protein dog food can fry the liver? will Polo likely gain weight cause of the high protein? |
You'll probably get better answers in the Health & Diet section. But I believe Acana and Orijen are both made by the same company, but Acana is a little less protein than the Orijen. High protein has never been known to CAUSE liver or kidney problems, however if the dog has pre-existing conditions, sometimes a lower protein diet is better. I think the reason some people are against higher protein diets are because Yorkies are so prone to liver shunt. Many people feed their Yorkies higher protein diets though and do absolutely great. From my understanding, in order to consume that much protein... one must also work off the protein, if that makes sense. For example, high-energy dogs should eat higher protein levels than a couch potato. Jackson is a pretty high energy dog and he's also bigger at 12.5lbs so he thrives on the high protein. Jackson is my picky picky dog and almost 3 weeks ago we started feeding him Nature's Variety Instinct (Duck & Turkey formula) and he LOVES it! He has never, ever, ever, eaten a dry food like this w/o mixing something yummy in. I highly suggest the food. It's grain-free and 35% protein so it's high but not quite as high as the Orijen's and EVO's, etc. |
Britster is absolutely right on the description between the two. I opt for lower protein as Cosmo was drinking way too much water and peeing way too much for me on the high protein food so we go lower and stay between 23-28% protein. We use NV Prairie kibble and NV raw medallions but if not this we would have been on the Acana for sure. |

Eva eats Orijen puppy formula. She LOVES it(eats the whole bowl every time) and has great firm poopies, but I recently had a really irritating issue with it. I just started a thread about this, it is called, Here is my Orijen issue...Before you buy different size bags of this brand read that post.:) |
So my choices are Orijen or Acana? Both are nice foods. which one do you think will be better?? Whichever your baby likes better :p . . . I would choose Orijen . . . Check your local pet store for samples. Instinct is also a great choice. Does Acana have lower protein content then Orijen? Yes it does do your dogs actually eat this food well? (and not pick at it) I haven't personally fed it, but it's going to depend upon each individual dog Is it true that high protein dog food can fry the liver? No. High protein is a quality diet bc dogs are carnivors, after all. Some dogs have a rise in thirst, but I haven't noticed a difference. will Polo likely gain weight cause of the high protein? I believe it's the calories, not the protein Hope that helps! Good luck. :) |
Update So I have been feeding Polo Orijen for two weeks he loves it! His coat looks great on this food. His breath smells better, he has little to none eye boogers. He does not beg for food at the table anymore(I never give him anything from the table) he seems to be more energetic he eats it everytime I put it down! Today I got Acana Pacifica and mixed some with his Orijen he loved that too. I am so glad I found a food that he loves so much!! I was wondering is it okay to mix Acana And Orijen together? |
