Boiled Chicken & Rice...
 
Hello... I was just wondering If it is safe to feed Boiled Chicken & rice instead of wet dog food ? I feed sami dry food as well, but gave him wet food in the evening (dinner). when he was sick when he was given those shots all at once I was cooking him boiled chicken & rice instead of buying it in a can. and of course he loved the idea Im cooking just for him :rolleyes:but I think I created a little problem here, he wont eat dog food now and thought well at least if I am cooking his food I do know whats in it! but Im not sure if it is a good thing to do or if it is safe to feed him this on a day to day feeding? he is feed once in the morning about 1/2 cup dry food then the evenings I give him a cup 1/2, although his dish still has food in it when I get home from work!
any suggestions or advise would be much appreciated. does any one cook for their yorkie? or i'm the only person here that does this? Please say there are a lot of you that do this? :rolleyes:

I home cook for Layla. However, if home cooking is making up more than 10-20% of his diet- he needs to be supplemented with vitamins and calcium/phosphorus.

I home cook and add to his kibble.
Once they taste the chicken it's understandable why they don't want
dog food. It's perfectly fine to add chicken to their kibble.
I would not use rice daily, may cause constapation, instead
add green beans, peas and or carrots. I cook 1 family package of
chicken breasts, boiling them, every two weeks and keep them in
the freezer. They thaw out over night so there is always fresh
chicken to add to his kibble. I also add the veggies in his evening
meal along with the chicken and kibble.
If I were you, I would omitt the can food and add chicken, veggies
to his kibble. This way he is getting the vitamins and supplements
from his kibble and added protein from the chicken.

I recently asked the Vet this question since I am having eating issues with mine. She told me that our food has too much fat in it for one. Secondly, if we give them human food they will want that and will not eat their dog food. I have seen that happen when I give him a bit of my fish since I couldn't eat the whole piece, or just split some of it with him.

contrary to what your vet has said- human food, in general, does not have too much fat. Both chicken breast and white rice are VERY low in fat and overal very healthy for our dogs. As long as you stay away from all pork products there is very little issues with fat.

and other human food. Your vet is correct in saying that human
food has too much fat in it and a Yorkie should not have fat because
it can and will cause pancreititis and other gastric problems.
Veggies have no fat in them and are great healthy snacks.
Boiled chicken has no fat, it's cooked out, which is why it's healthy
to add to their kibble.
They will gobble up their kibble if chicken and veggies are added to it.
If you have a picky eater this is one healthy way of getting them to eat.
It's also important that a Yorkie not get too much protein.
So be careful how much protein your kibble has in it. I wouldn't give
more than 24grams of protein per serving.

From what I have learned, protein is only an issue if your dog has liver problems. Layla is home cooked and most of her diet is protein and she is doing just fine on it.

Why is protein not good for dogs, or that much rather~? I do give carrots or other veggies to him now and then. Read my post on "Eating Issues Again: Chef Michael".

I believe that is a myth. Unless your dog has liver issues- there is nothing wrong with high levels of protein. Dogs who eat raw and eat home cooked food are on mostly protein diets- and do wonderfully well.

Your right it is, I guess because that's what I do I assumed all should do it.
I watch the protein to advoid any liver problems ahead.

Great Idea! and I will omit the rice because he is constipated :( and Im too blame... I thought about to much starch causing that problem so I did just cut up his chicken but I didn't think about adding veggies? so Im some what confused is it ok with the protein issues that has been discussed here? I do know protein is another constipating factor? or is that pertain to humans? :confused:

Chicken and rice is absolutely fine if it's done the right away.
As Marci said, if homecooked makes up more than 10% of their diet, supplements need to be added. You really can't go by volume either since wet food is mostly moisture. I would go by calories personally. If chicken and rice isn't working, you can do chicken and sweet potato. It looks like he is getting quite a bit of unsupplemented homecooked though. That could lead to deficiencies over time. The chicken should also be boneless and skinless with no fat if you aren't following a (good) recipe that calls for fat.

Ground turkey is fine, but sometimes they grind fat in with it which is not usually a good thing when you don't know exact amounts. You could cook your own turkey breast and remove the fat. :)

well I am feeling pretty dumb here :( I couldn't figure out why he has been scratching more than usual,and I couldn't figure out why he was sensitive when i would love on him and massage him I was thinking hes not getting the proper supplements or something but I think he is allergic to chicken?
I have stoped feeding him chicken the last time I posted and went to petco bought a bag of duck & Potato which he really isn't going for and may take some time to adjust to it and not getting anymore chicken. and you know as long as I hand him a piece he has eaten it. so hopefully I can get him back on dry food with all the supplements and I also ordered fish oil with omega 3 and everything else I dont think I have been giving him! I feel terrible and he hasn't been scratching or itching other than normal for two days. I haven't been following a recipe at all. thank you all for bringing this to my attention! I love YT! I can't believe I have gotten so busy I had forgotten how great you all have helped me with tilly and sami! and stoped coming on as often as I use to! Thanx so much!
