We went to our first vet visit today :confused::confused::confused:We just got back from the vet and unfortunately my baby has a tapeworm and coccidia. he gave us a med for tapeworm which she refuses to eat and we gotta go back tomorrow to get the med for coccidia. HELP!!! I hear tapeworm is from fleas is this true, I gave them a stool sample and if she does have fleas beside getting her taken care of what can i do to get rid of it in the house? She's only been here a day. She's not scratching out of control but I want her to be flea free as well as our place. Please help. |
I don't think tape worms come from fleas. They come from being around other dogs who have tapeworms. Did the vet say she has fleas? They usually check for that. At least my vet does. |

Cooper had that and I felt devastated.....at least the vet found them before you started seeing them yourself a few days later and freaking out like I did....they are caused by fleas......she might not have a flea on her now, but somewhere she ingested a flea/or flea egg etc. Good news is it only takes 1 round of medicne to get rid of them in her. Make sure you are very diligent in cleaning up her stools in the yard (where ever she defecates) to prevent re-infestation of the worms. I would just mix up some bleach water and clean her crate the next few days and wash her bedding. |
tapeworms do come from flea bites. if he didn't give you meds for fleas, then bath her in dawn original dishwashing liquid. it does not prevent fleas but will kill the ones she has and you flea comb them off. i don't know what kind of medicine he gave you for the tapes but few wormers kill them. A really good one Drontal. it is a pill and usually the dose is one half pill. You can open her mouth and push it as far to the back of her mouth as you can. you will feel when you have it back far enough. if you put it in right, she will have to swallow it and not spit it back out. You can get a can of flea treatment spray to spray your couch, carpet and other areas she has been. then you will need to vaccum it up. Here is an article that explainss about tapes and how dogs get them. http://www.sniksnak.com/doghealth/tapeworms.html |
Sorry to hear that about your fur baby. My dogs won't take pills either, so I push them in to a soft, chewy treat or give them in a Greenie Pill Pocket. They go nuts over those things. Disguising it is the key. |
Tape worm Your puppy got a Tape worm because she ate a flea. That released the tape worm into your dogs body. It's a complicated life cycle. I'm surprised your vet didn't go ahead and pill the pup while you had her in the office. I know you hate to traumatize her but just stick that pill at the very back of her tongue and then close her muzzle fast. Gently stroke her throat until she swallows. |
