Dog food samples
 
I wanted to post this here in case any of you have never thought about asking for dog food samples. I wrote the Diamond Dog food company asking if I could have some samples of their Naturals dog food for senior dogs because my 10 yo Collie and 15 yo Rat Terrier are both getting to where they have a hard time chewing food. I wanted to try this brand because they carry it in bulk in my pet food store and my collie eats a lot of food. They have always eaten dry kibble and neither of them really cares for canned which is good because I don't like giving it anyways. After I emailed them their representative emailed me back asking questions about the dogs so she could get an idea of what to send. Well the samples came today via UPS in a 6 lb box! I was shocked to get so many! Reggie was in sniffing mode the minute I opened the box. I let him try a couple of the Taste of the Wild kibbles as a treat and he thought they were yummy! The rest of the food in the box is mostly senior dog food with a couple bags for big dogs. This was so cool to receive. Now I have to figure out which ones the old doggies like.

Could you post there address? I would love to try Muffy and Buddy one some new foods. I have been thinking of trying Taste of Wild but Chicken Soup sounds good also.

Please just be aware - all of the food manufactured by Diamond that contain fish meal...the fish meal is preserved with ethoxyquin, a carcinogen. :(

The only ones they sent me with fish in them is one of the Chicken Soup for the Soul and a couple Taste of the Wild. The Diamond Naturals I got are all for senior dogs and have chicken or chicken and eggs mixes. I read all the bags and none of them had ethoxyquin listed as an ingredient or preservative.

Since I have never heard of that I looked it up and found this interesting bit of info here:

Another pet food additive of some controversy is ethoxyquin, which was approved as a food additive over thirty-five years ago for use as an antioxidant chemical preservative in animal feeds. Approximately ten years ago, CVM began receiving reports from dog owners attributing the presence of ethoxyquin in the dog food with a myriad of adverse effects, such as allergic reactions, skin problems, major organ failure, behavior problems, and cancer. However, there was a paucity of available scientific data to support these contentions, or to show other adverse effects in dogs at levels approved for use in dog foods. More recent studies by the manufacturer of ethoxyquin showed a dose-dependent accumulation of a hemoglobin-related pigment in the liver, as well as increases in the levels of liver-related enzymes in the blood. Although these changes are due to ethoxyquin in the diet, the pigment is not made from ethoxyquin itself, and the health significance of these findings is unknown. More information on the utility of ethoxyquin is still needed in order for CVM to amend the maximum allowable level to below that which would cause these effects, but which still would be useful in preserving the food. While studies are being conducted to ascertain a more accurate minimum effective level of ethoxyquin in dog foods, CVM has asked the pet food industry to voluntarily lower the maximum level of use of ethoxyquin in dog foods from 150 ppm (0.015%) to 75 ppm. Regardless, most pet foods that contained ethoxyquin never exceeded the lower amount, even before this recommended change.

Diamond (and others) does not have to list ethoxyquin as an ingredient on the bags - because they didn't add it. That's the scary/upsetting part. They have a supplier for the fish meal - and it is the SUPPLIER that adds the ethoxyquin. There's another thread on here about the different pet food manufacturers and what their fish meal is preserved with...it's very informative.

Good to know. I just won't be buying any dog food with fish in it. Just to clarify, does Taste of the Wild and Chicken Soup for the Soul have it in it too?

I didn't see anything about Wellness. Does anyone know about them? Reggie is on Wellness small dog super 5 mix.
