Only use pre-anesthesia for spay? As some of you may know, I have been on the hunt for a place to get Maddie spayed. I just got off the phone with one place and I really liked them because they actually let me talk to the vet. She said that they only use pre-anesthesia injections rather than gas, but they have gas available if needed. Anyone heard of this? |
Are they talking about Ketamine, I know thats an injection that is used before they put the dog under... |
Wait a read your post again..The dont use gas? |
It sounds like Propofol and they keep injecting or try to hurry. IMO, to maintain in a procedure as long as a spay, they should be hooking up the Iso or Sevo. I would not let them do it without it. |
She said that they use Propofol and Ketamine and "get in and get out". They always have gas right there in case they need it... |
I've never heard of this? I would steer clear though, just that they say they "get in and get out" tells me they try to hurry the procedure :( |
*Sigh* Why is it so difficult to find a vet around here?! I called the Mizzou Vet teaching hospital and they require the dog to stay TWO nights! I have yet to find a vet to give me the answers I want to hear! If ANYONE knows of a place in Mid-Missouri, or the St. Louis area (that's where my parents are from so we can stay there), please let me know! |
This is just not common practice and I would not like it at all. And while it's good to not take too much time on a spay to lessen time under anesthesia, line spays or rushed spays are just not good either. Bleeding needs to stop before closing and it shouldn't be rushed. I really feel bad for you because I know you're stuck. First, the bigger the office, the more likely they are to have newer equipment and maybe more up-to-date protocols. I'll look in your area and see if I can find anyone; but if something goes wrong, I don't want it to be my fault. :( I personally know of no vets in your area. |
Jewell Animal Hospital - Treating Pets like Jewells Not saying I like their annual vaccine thing though... Webster Groves Animal Hospital http://www.heritageveterinary.com/ |
 No, no, NO! Sounds like you already know that, though. Ketamine is sooo old school, and for good reason. As Ellie May said, ONLY Iso or Sevo for these little guys, and I would never let mine go under without fluids and a heated surgery table. I also wouldn't leave mine overnight- I have very high criteria! Good luck finding the best vet hospital, it is a lot harder than it should be. I hope you find your little girl the best dogter ever!!!!!!!!!! |

I have the same criteria. :) |
I am sooo sorry to invade your thread, but i was searching on the different anesthesias. today at the vet i was told there are two types: one is the injection and the other is gas can someone recommend me what to go with and which is better for a 5lb 1 yr old male yorkie for neutering? p.s i'm adopting a rescue in korea and he's not neutered |
I agree with everyone else. although I'm sure it is done, I have never heard of doing a spay/neuter with and injection. Is this the vet you always use? |

The injection is given to make them cooperative enough to intubate for the gas. You can mask down with gas along, but this isn't always recommended. Propofol is a good drug to give prior to giving gas (isoflurane or sevoflurane). |
