Small Animal "Specialist" Vets My vet sees all animals from horses to hamsters. I was wondering how many here take their yorkies to a small animal specialist. She's very healthy but I've been thinking of changing over to a specialist for Sophie. I think I would have more confidence in someone who concentrates on and limits their practice to small dogs and cats? What do you think? Jackie & my :littleangSophie :aimeeyork |
I had said for the longest time, "If Ellie ever needs surgery, she will go to a small breed specialist." Well, I never even ended up looking for one. Her teeth started falling out one day, and I was too freaked to care who took care of her. We ended up with a fabulous vet through the whole deal. I have no idea what I'd do without her, and she is not a small breed specialist at all. She only practices small animal medicine though (dogs, cats, rodents). We have never had a problem with her watching Ellie's size. All vets should know how much anesthesia to use, etc. That said, some practice better Yorkie med than others. It would be tricky to find one that knows a ton about the breed though. I would hesitate to go with a vet that does both small and large animal med only because a lot of times these are considered "farm vets" and some are very old school (outdated anesthesia protocol and such). So I think you have to know their protocols, know what they should be doing and then figure out if you want to keep going there. |

My son is stuying vet medicine and even tho he want so specialize in small animals, he loves hamsters and guinea pigs, he has to be able to treat any animal that will come to the hospital, he teated a snake with the head vet on saturday.. :eek: he comes home with all different stories and how cool I think he is for doing this.. I am so proud of him. the hospital he works mainly specializes on dogs and cats but sometimes they get an exotic or wild animal and they have to treat it, so really a good vet is a good vet, I take my yorkies and silkies there and he takes his Alaskan malamute too.. so really if you are happy with the doctor that is what is important.. hugs, Carmen in nj |

Hmmm I have never thought about this. When we go to our vet we only see dogs and cats in the waiting room but who knows if he goes out to visit the "farms". I am very pleased with his service and would never change regardless if he does other animals or not. Just my opinion though... I would be scared of getting someone who doesn't care like he does. |
