new puppy. when can we first bath him? hello- About a month ago, my wife and I got a Yorkie puppy. he is now 4 months old. we were told not to bath him for awhile. How long should we hold off giving him a bath? Also, when would it be okay to bring him to the groomer? (ie are we suppose to wait on that too) Lastly, how do you keep his coat nice and clean without giving him baths??? thanks! |
I would say your alright to give him a bath and a hair cut. Breeder's usually tell you not to baith them right away because your Yorkie doesn't really know you yet and a bath can be tramatic if not done right or if the pup isn't use to it. It's a lot for them all at once. Make sure you go slow for his first bath and don't get any water in his eye's or nose. If you make his first bath fun he may even start to enjoy them. If his first bath is a bad experience for him you'll have trouble with other bath times. Good Luck! |
Welcome to YT! I gave my girls baths when I first got them ( they were two months old). I never knew you had to wait! I wouldn't be able to have stood it without bathing them for all of that time! I say, go ahead and do it. Good luck! :p |
I started giving Trixie a bath a week after I got her. She was 3,5 months at that time. The breeder told us it was okay to give her a bath. |
We actually gave Zack a bath after a week (and he didn't really mind it). But then my wife was a dog supply place buying him a toy and the guy said not to bath him because he has some oils that will be washed off and it is bad for him. Does this guy not know what he is talking about? |
I gave both of mine a bath about 4 hours after I got them. They did fine. |
I personally wouldn't bath any puppy until 12 weeks of age if it is not necessary. The occasional rear area may need attention, but it is not needed to completely wet the pup for this. Reason most breeders will tell you not to bath a pup is because if you get water up their noses this can cause pneumonia. If you do choose to bath, please use extreme caution and use a wash cloth around the face and it doesn't hurt to put cotton balls in the ears to avoid water getting into their ears. |
I started giving Joey regular baths the day that I brought him home. I want him to get used to baths as a puppy. I've found that makes bathing so much easier as they get older. |
Well, it sounds to me like the guy who told my wife that we shouldn't bath Zack doesn't know what he is talking about! Thanks for all the comments |
We bathed Bender as soon as we got him home (mostly because we found him suffering in a pet shop, small and shivering in a corner and covered in his own wastes). He had a very nice first bath, and he was about 5 weeks old, but if you bathe your puppy you must be careful to do it in a 'non-scary' fashion. When we bathed Bender the first time we put a little luke warm water in our sink and then had a cup of water for rinsing/wetting. We poured some water in our hands and gently rubbed it into his fur in the beginning to get him used to the idea of the water, and it was as if the wet was right along with being pet and cooed at. By the end of the bath he was ok with us pouring water on his back a little at a time to rinse him. I think at that point in time he was just happy people were being so nice to him and giving him so much attention. Now he's 2, and he really likes to swim around in the tub with my husband when he's taking a bath...he takes about 90% of his showers with me. I have a bath seat in the shower and he sits next to me and loves the spray :) |
i didn't know you were supposed to wait either. i bathed him in the tub and used a cup for the water. and i do agree getting them used to it early (not weebaby size tho) will help you in the long run. i thought about bathing with him, but my husband thought it was weird. i may start anyhow! |
Hi, When I got my first puppy (she was 8 weeks), I bathed her, she did fine. Needed to because she stank. The breeder said it was fine. WIth my second puppy (at 16 weeks), I also bathed him, and the vet said it was fine. I put some warm water in the tub, shampoo him/her down, then rinse well with warm water, apply conditioner, then rinse well getting it all out. I towel dry then use the blow dryer on medium setting, but make sure the heat isnt too high or too close to the animal. Keep your baby away from drafts/cold for a bit. :-) |
I just got my Yorkie pup a little over a week ago and have been waiting to make sure that she is completely settled in before giving her a bath as I don't want to add anymore stress. Instead, I got some of the puppy bath wipes and just rub her down with them when she seems to be getting a little smelly. While I know it's not as good as a bath, I figure it is better than nothing until I feel she is ready to go for the real thing. |
Hi, if the pup is over 8 weeks, its fine to wash her. Just make sure you towel dry, then blow dry her (as stated above), and keep her in a warm place for several hours. When my girl was 8 weeks, the same day I got her I washed her because she was smelly. So I am sure it's safe if she's over 8 weeks old. If you don't feel comfortable, just wait another week then. |
When I got my dog at 10 weeks, I am pretty sure I bathe her right away. I have bathe her every 8-10 days since then. I can not stand the doggie smell. I put the towels in the dryer to make sure she is wrapped up warm when I am finished. She is still not loving the bath, but she is OK with it. She loves the blow dryer and will fall asleep while I am brushing and combing her. :D |
