Obsession with eating Good Day, I am a new member and hope I can get some advice. Our 2 yr old female yorkie has become obsessed with eating. She was eating twice a day (early AM/late afternoon). Science Diet Adult small bites 1/4 cup. She also did her business twice a day. In the past month or so, she stands by the pantry where her food is kept and barks. It sounds more like a scream, it is so high pitched. She is already a tad over weight. We give her baby carrots, watermelon, low calorie dog ice cream...but even tho she eats EVERYTHING that is offered, she still wants more dog food. So I am giving her a tad more mid-day. And now she is having 3 to 4 bowel movements a day. She isn't a tiny one.. usually weighs 6.8lbs to 7 lbs and now is up to 8.2. We have tried ignoring her...but the crying and whimpering is heart-wrenching. Can anyone offer a suggestion to getting her back to twice a day feedings with only an occasional treat? Thank you. |
Science Diet is one of the worst dog foods on the market. It's full of fillers and by-products. She's eating and eating because she is hungry. You really should consider home cooking. It's the best and safest. Here is some info on dog food: Dead Cats And Dogs Used To Make Pet Food Closer Look At A Rendering Plant The Dark Side of Recycling The best book I highly recommend on this very subject is, FOOD PETS DIE FOR by Ann N. Martin. |
If she was doing well on 1/2 cup daily and now is hungry all the time and since she is overweight, I'd take her to the vet for bloodwork. I would say her metabolism is just fast, but she is overweight, so probably not. If you are sure she is healthy, then feed her more and exercise her more I guess. Come to think of it, Ellie used to be on that food and ate 1/2 a day (free fed...her choice). She was about 5.8 pounds at the time. |
Poor baby. Do you think she is really hungry or just obsessed (or bored?) Does she have any other health problems? As suggested, you might try changing her food to something with less fillers. There is a list on here with dog food ratings. Or even try switching to a raw diet. If she is bored, next time she starts crying, distract her with a game or a walk. (sometimes I go to the pantry and cry when I am bored:rolleyes:) Good luck, I know she needs to maintain a healthy weight, but we all hate to think our babies are hungry. |
