cleft pallatte My Yorkie had 3 puppies 12 days ago 2 girls and 1 boy. One of the little girls has a cleft lip and partial cleft pallate. Does anyone know anything about this...She was 5 oz when born then quickly went down to 3 oz...due to not being able to nurse so we start to bottle feedbut does not have very good suctionbut chokes frequently. Idid start to burp herand that has helped. I am happy to say today she is at 71/2 oz(her brother is 1.1lbs and her sister is 14oz) I really would like some advice on her...... |
Aww, poor baby.. Im sorry I have no advice but perhaps if you ask this question in Breeder talk you will get the help you need.. By the way... Welcome to YT!! |
So Sad So sorry to hear about your little girl. I have no advice but there are lots of great breeders on this forum -- I'm sure they can all help you. Good luck. |
cleft pallate thank you for your concern....lots of worries and sleepless nights on this end... |
Oh, that's so sad. She is gaining weight again, though. That's good. I would talk to the vet. She would definitely need surgery at some point. I'm sorry. :( |
When my boxer had puppies one of them had a severe cleft pallete. It actually couldnt even eat becasue it couldnt get any suction for milk. It was so sad. I took her to the vet because she wasnt gaining any weight and getting very sick and dehydrated. The vet said she wouldnt make it because she would never be able to eat(even later in life) and basically she was suffering and dying and there was nothing they could do so she had to be put to sleep. It was horrible. This is why I will never breed a dog again I personally couldnt handle that. BUt like I said that was a severe cleft pallette. The top of her mouth had an opening/crack that went all the way down to the back of her throat and it had an opening to her nasal passage. Having said that I think your baby should be able to make it as long as she is able to eat or can be bottle fed. I hope she does okay. I think you are going to have to take her to the vet and see what they say. Please let us know. |

Your breeding pair should not be used for future litters, and the other two pups should be spay/neutered to prevent passing on this trait. I am sorry for giving such sad advice...this is one of those awful risks that breeders must deal with. I hope the info is helpful. |

cleft pallatte She has been seen by a vet(actually 2) but they have never seen a cleft pallate pup befor....they did said they think she should be o.k because the part of her pallatte that is missing is a small portion by the gum line....however there could be more things wrong like a liver shunt...its a horrible "wait and see" game. |
cleft pallatte I did ask the vet if genetics were involved and they said that there was no proof that that was the case....when I asked about breeding my dog again they thought that should not be a problem we would just put her on folic acid a couple of months ahead of time....i am not a breeder for profit..i just wanted another yorkie like mine.......she is sooooo gooooodddd. We really enjoy our yorkie and wanted to add to our house.....like 2 cats, 2 hamsters, a hermit crab,a yorkie and 2 kids weren't enough....this little one is such a fighter, i really hate to put her down until I know she is suffering for sure or that she has given up the fight....I am hopeful that now that she is gaining weight that that is a positive sign. but i am realistic I know other problems can arise...but I think she deserves the chance...I will keep her and sell the other too and make sure that the buying people know about the little one and hopefully they will decide not to breed them....it is such a hard thing to go through... |

There is no 'hopefully' about having the people who purchase your pups deciding to breed or not. You need to let them know that they must not be bred under any circumstances. I am certain you wouldn't want anyone else to have to go through what you are dealing with now. Hold registration papers until you recieve a copy of spay/neuter done...or have it done yourself before placement. I admire your dedication in working so hard to save this little girl and sincerely hope it turns out well. |
haven't heard of yorkies having this but my friend had a bulldog that whelped 9 puppies and 3 of them had it. vet thought it was best to put them to sleep. their cleft palates were pretty severe. even surgery would not have helped them much. he also suggested to not breed with the same stud again. |
cleft pallatte Sylvan....can you give me a place I can go to for more research on this....because if this puppy does not make it I still would like to use my Yorkie as the mother.....but use a different father.....thank you for the info. you have given me.... |

How is she doing today? I think its great that you are trying to give her a fighting chance. I think as long as she is receiving nourishment that she must have a chance. My puppy wasnt getting any food and wasnt capable of it. It was a really hard thing to do putting her down. When I bred my boxer she had 6 puppies. 1 was born stillborn, one had the severe cleft pallette and one was missing half of an arm. So we had several defects and tragedies and it was sad. However we had 3 wonderful healthy girls that were so much fun to raise and made it all worth it even though I wont do it again. So I know what it feels like and you cant lose hope :) . I am wishing her the best. Please keep us updated on her progress. |

Thank you for your concern....So sorry to hear what you had to go through with your boxers...so very sad.....I can't blame you for not wanting to go through that again....even though you raised 3 healthy and happy puppies it just tears your heart out when something like that happens....my little one is doing as well as we could have hoped for....she is gaining weight everyday...she is now up to 8oz today,,,,and being very sassy.....everytime i fed her today..she peed all over me...I am hoping her eyes will open tomorrow...i see her brother and sisters are starting to open today...it wil be oneless thing to worry about once the eyes are open....you know when there is one birth defect there is the possibilities of others...so I guess i will be relieved to see that there are eyes underneath those lids....i just can't relax and be happy that she is gaining weight...i always have to be thinking of the "what ifs"...today was the first day i was trying to come up with a name for her (we are keeping her) its a very difficult thing to do.....I want something special....looking for ideas if you have any???thanks again for everyones concern..... |
So she is 2 weeks old now right? I think that is really good then if she is gaining weight and is active. I really think if she is already 14 days that is a good sign. I didnt realize it takes that long for yorkie pups to open thier eyes. My boxer pups didnt take long at all. |

That's is a great suggestion. I like it. Good luck with your little one it sounds like she is doing very well under the circumstances. I'm so glad for you. Keep up the good work and continue to keep us posted. |

Thanks for the suggestion...however we have decided to name her...."Elizabeth Myeisha KT" Lizzy for short......Elizabeth means < by God>...and Myeisha means..<he who is loved greatly> KT stands for my children Kelsey and Trevor.... Her Eyes opened yesterday...we were quite surprised since her brothers are not....which I am beginning to worry about...since they were two weeks old on yesterday....but if there is one thing I have learned through this whole thing is "patience" |

She is most definitely a blessing. Is she still eating good? You decided to keep her right? Good luck. The others will open their eyes before you know it. Mollie's were over 2 weeks old before they all had their eyes open. It will be worth the wait. I do like the name Lizzy we had a yellow lab at one time and that was her name. |

Yes we are keeping....how could I give her away with all that we have been through...we were going to keep one out of the litter anyways....that is why we bred Zoe........she is eating really well...weighs 9 3/4 oz.....Do you think I should worry about her brother and sister who weigh 1lb 6oz and 1lb 4oz....they are sooooo big... |
Quote:
I definitely could not give her up either. We kept one of Mollie's the one we were going to give to our 26 year old son. But, he was killed in an accident when they were only a week old. I just couldn't bear to part with him. He is 9 weeks old now. Fiesty. I think I remember reading on here that you are bottle feeding her. The other 2 are getting all of mom's milk so they are just eating her share as well and have gotten use to it. I really wouldn't worry too much about it at this time. If you do start to really worry about it just ask your vet and see what they have to say. Have you posted any pictures of your babies yet? I don't remember I didn't read through the thread again. So forgive me. Is it bad enough to where she is going to need surgery when she gets old enough? Just keep up the good work with her. Thanks for keeping us posted. |
I am so very sorry to hear about your son.....the absolute worse thing anyone can go through.....I'm sure the puppy is so very precious to you.....is he named after your son??? We will be posting pictures hopefully Sunday night..if we can figure out how to do it...we tried last night but didn't get it to work....(their posted somewhere we just don't know where..lol) We are going out of town tomorrow (yes with the puppies) for a wedding so we won't have time to mess with it until Sunday..... She will need surgery when she gets bigger. I'll ask more questions the next time I see the vet....Thanks for your comments and concern especially with all the you have been through...you are in my prayers........ |

Thanks. Yes it has been very difficult. I just don't know what we would do without him. I named him Wyatt Samuel. Sam was our son. You guys have a good trip. Have fun at the wedding. |
