Cleaning ears Just a quick question about cleaning our furbabies' ears... It was recommended to me to use alcohol to clean Sophie's ears. I've used it on other dogs and cats and it's worked fine, but I wanted to check on it for her. I know alcohol is a drying agent, but I've never noticed any drying out. I wasn't able to go anywhere at the time to get an actual ear cleaning solution, but I plan to get some eventually. So i guess my questions are, is alcohol okay to use and what ear cleaning solutions do you all recommend? |
I've never used plain alcohol. We use Chlorhexiderm Flush. |
i wouldn't use alcohol in her ears. I'd use an ear cleaning solution and my choice is one i can get from my vet. I use epi-otic. Morgan generally has really clean ears so this is good for her. if your dog is prone to ear infections there are other ear cleaning agents that you can get from your vet to help dry the ear after cleaning. |

Ellie is prone to yeast infections, so she has to have it after baths. |
Thanks for your suggestions. I'm hoping to go to petsmart or petco this week so I was planning on getting something better there. But I try to clean her ears regularly and I guess the alcohol will be ok for a little while, right? |
I have always used the Swim Ear (alcohol) after baths/swims on all my girls and other dogs that i have had. We have never had an ear infection. I just squeeze in each ear after bath or swim and rub all the excess off with a towel. I would NOT recommend putting this in if you suspect an ear infection so make sure the ears are clear before you do this or it will really burn. I use the ear cleaner (non alcohol) about once a month if needed but usually they don't need that. When my Swim Ear bottle is empty, i just open and refill with the regular rubbing alcohol. I just use the bottle so that i know what's in there. I have done this on all the dogs i have owned for the past 25 years and never had an ear infection in any of them...all types of breeds. There are probably other ways to keep them clear and clean but this has worked for mine. |
I use a product called calm ears on my crew, and no more ear problems since my holistic vet recomeded it about a year and a half ago.. |
