Red skin, pimples and itching - anyone else?
 

First, let me say that my yorkie has a history of allergies and skin problems and the vet has seen him many times for these. Recently, I made two trips to the vet for the problem I am about to explain.

It all started when I noticed a pimple on my yorkie's back (right in the center of his back). I kept an eye on it, but when it grew, I went to the doc. According to the doc, it's nothing serious. A fat deposit cyst, perhaps. Eventually, the pimple popped and healed up to form a much smaller, scabby pimple. Doc continues to say it's not a big deal based on what he's seen (mind you, this doc has 30+ years experience with yorkies). So I wouldn't say I am terribly worried, especially considering his history of allergies.

However, I recently noticed that my york has several spots of red rashes around his back. I also noticed that some of these spots contain small pimple like things and some spots are scabby and flaky. I do not intend to run to the vet every week. I figure I will monitor him and make sure it doesn't get worse. In fact, after starting a new home made diet, it seems to have gotten a little better. Just wondering if anyone has similar issues and what it might be?

I'm sure with a home cooked diet the skin problems will clear up, but in the event they do not, I'd have the Vet. run a blood panel. ;)

Hi, Jack has a cyst above his hind leg too, we took him to the vet today and the vet made it seem like it was no big deal. It's hard not to think of it as not being a big deal considering the fact that these dogs are our babies! A few months ago I spoke with a lady about wanting to change Jack's food because he had been on Solid Gold for about a year and seemed not to like it. She suggested that I not do so and said that a customer of hers claimed that his dog was losing his fur and nothing the vet did helped until he changed his dog's diet and switched to Solid Gold. If nothing else try giving your pup Solid Gold. By the way Jack has allergies too. Good luck! Keep us updated.

yes that is a staph infection as my dd has that currently so I would take him in for antibiotics and shampoo with chlorhexedine shampoo. or check out the post about blisters and how someone healed the dog with chamomille tea rinse

he does not need a blood panel but a skin culture to be sent to lab and for them to determine what antibiotic will kill this staph infection. We go to a dermatologist as dd has horrible allergies and exactly what you describe is what she has red pimples with crusties on top of it and it is very common in allergy dogs to get staph as when they itch they open up skin and let bacteria get in and thus staph. Best to wash your dog weekly to keep the bacteria down and the allergents off the skin from the air

Can this be transmitted to another furbaby in the home?

no i have two other dogs and neither have staph and they all sleep on the same beds so do not worry about that

Probably staph intermedius - this is usually treated w/ 1 month of Simplicef once-a-day pills.

But, you also need to discuss why this infection occurred - if this is from the itching caused by allergies - then you need to address the allergies.

Food allergies are not common, enviro allergies very common. How you treat them depends on which allergy...
