Teeth cleaning Hi, how is everyone? I have a 5 1/2 year old, 5 lb named Winnie. I wasn't aware of how important it is to keep their teeth clean until recently. He has already had 6 teeth pulled. I have found a dental hygienist who loves all dogs. She is paid to do my Yorkie's teeth for $50. The vet wants $250 to clean and they put him to sleep which I don't like to do. The vet says that it is impossible to do a good job unless he is asleep. I take him to my hygienist every 3.5 months. He is not used to a brush so it is nearly impossible for me to brush them myself. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Is every 3.5 months too much? I feel so bad for him when I see that his teeth are full of plaque. Thanks! |
If you can't brush (or even possibly if you can), then he needs to get cleanings at the vet probably yearly (or more) under anesthesia unless you can find some really good products products to use. You may have the vet do it once and then use OraVet. MaxtGuard may also work well. It would be impossible for the hygienist to clean under the gum line and do a very thorough job. Anesthesia is risky, but plaque build up leading to organ dysfunction isn't good either. Have you tried a finger brush? Your finger and a cloth to get him used to it? |
Teeth cleaning Thanks for the tips! |
