Food...Totally Confused
 
After much research, I settled on Innova dry for Apple...It has worked well for some time, but then I had to start adding a little of this and a little of that to make it more palatable, and now she just doesn't want it :rolleyes: I'm sure I'd be bored w/the same food twice a day, so I'm on the hunt for something else...I have read about so many foods and so many pros and cons for each that I'm totally bumfuddled as to what's next :confused:...I'd really like some feed-back about foods that are truly holistic, healthy, and tasty...I really don't want to go 42% protein, as in Evo, and need a really small kibble for a really tiny mouth... I'm kinda leaning towards Solid Gold Wee Bits and Orijen...I'd really like to try Acana, but they don't make a small- bite kibble...Can anyone share their recommendations....Thanks

Lily is fed Orijen puppy because it is a small kibble food. It is high in protein, but so are the diets of raw feed furbabies and wild animals.
High Protein does not cause liver or kidney problems, but if there are existing problems they can be exacerbated by high protein causing them to be noticed.

Thanks for the input...Apple doesn't have any probs w/liver/kidney, but I work, so I just hate for her to have a bunch of energy, from high protein, and me not home to play with, or take her for a walk (we walk twice a day for 30 minutes)...Does Lily like Orijen puppy? Apple is almost a year old (10 1/2 months), so it will be time to switch her to adult soon, don't you think? But I'm good w/puppy, for the time being, if she likes it...Fortunately, Apple can eat almost any (high-quality) food w/no side effects...Just trying to get something that is really good for her, and she likes...

Have you considered the Nature's Variety Praire line? They have a variety you could rotate between to keep Apple from getting bored. The Praire is much lower in protein than their Instinct, and is an excellent food.

Yes, I liked the Nature's Variety Prairie...Is it really small kibble? The little boutique, that I frequent, carries that line, but just feeling through the bag at the size of the kibble, I wasn't sure if it was small enough?

Ohhhh, I can't remember the size of the Prairie kibble. I've been feeding mostly Instinct and Tate was able to eat it even at around 2 1/2 pounds (puppy).

Jackson's been doing the same thing with the Innova... he just wouldn't touch it anymore. Even when I began mixing in things, he'd pick around the kibble. He seems to love Nature's Variety Instinct the Duck meal and Turkey one but I just got it yesterday. It's the most he's ever eaten any kibble in 1 day without something like wet food etc being mixed in. I'm hoping he continues to like it just as much. We shall see. It's about 35% protein I believe. Wonderful ingredients though. Kibble is small.

Thanks Brit...I think I'll probably go w/the Nature's Variety, since it is small kibble, and I agree, the ingredients are awesome...I'm off to get it after 3...I wish everyone would sell one lb. bags, so we could switch off each one pound...I know Merrick's Solid gold has that...I think it would keep Ms. Persnickity content lol...

Oh, btw, talking w/this lady that has the little boutique shoppe, she mentioned that if we didn't keep the 5 and 6 lb. bags in air-tight containers, they'd most likely get rancid or get bacteria in them, before we finished the bag...That might be why Apple is not eating the Innova...In fact, the last bag, she stopped eating at about 2/3 of the way down, so I'm also off to get air-tight containers, and I'm supposed to put the whole bag in the container...She said, take out about a week's worth and put it in another air-tight container, and you would be giving the food much less exposure to the air that causes the food to go rancid, etc...

Lily does like Orijen Puppy. She likes it soft though so I have to prepare it for her. She was on a different food when I got her so I transitioned her to the puppy because of the kibble size. I will probably move her over to the adult in a month or so. We already feed our boxer mix the adult Orijen and he eats it like nobodies business!
Neither of them exhibit over the top energy. They get little spurts and then go take naps. My 3 year boy much prefers sunning or laying on the couch lol.

I don't necessarily agree with her. As long as you put it into an airtight container, I don't think you need to separate it again. For a 5 pound bag, you should have 20 cups of food. So depending on the amount you feed, it should be about a month's worth. That's about how often we replace our Adult Orijen that our boxer boy eats, though it's a 30 pound bag with him :rolleyes:
I just get the little 1 pound bags for Lily.

I just get the little 1 pound bags for Lily.
Apple just eats 1/2 cup per day (1/4 cup morning and evening)...And she even leaves a little bit, because I think her tummy gets full...But wow, I love the idea of getting Orijen in 1 lb. bags...I think they all should sell dog food for the little ones, in 1 lb. bags...

I posted on this earlier, I ordered samples from tons of places. Chicken Soup, Artemis, Canidae, Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, etc etc. I had no preference for any one over the other. Once I got them all in, I did a taste test with my little picky brats and Timberwolf Wild & Natural was the overwhelming winner. Once they tasted it, they wouldn't touch anything else. That was about 2 months ago and they are still the exact same, won't touch anything else.

Also, it's the smallest kibble I've ever seen. Ollie is a tiny little thing and he was teething at that time so I was on a total quest for tiny kibble. It is about the size of a smiley icon :) or a black peppercorn. TINY. Half the time they don't even crunch it, they just swallow it. Alot of times I sit down with them and make them slow down until I hear crunching.

They sent me free samples and their customer service was out of this world (I asked ALOT of questions). The girl that helped me was Christina Noel and her email is Christina.Noel@timberwolforganics.com. She was an absolute doll.
