What kind of treats are okay for puppies? We are getting our first puppy tomorrow (Wednesday) and I am wondering, should I get some dog treats for him, and if so what kind are okay for puppies? |
First of all, congrats!! Pictures would be lovely :) Instead of doggy treats, Tinky's favorites are human food. Such as pineapple, unsalted meat -rarely-, apples, bananas, and such. Its just more convenient for me then going out to buy treats. Although if I were to get some, the only ones I've tried are Natural Balance's. |
We used cheerios because they were so small are mostly air, and didn't interfere with his appetite for more nutritious food, and he loved them. You do a lot of treat giving in the early days, potty pad successes, grooming attempts, just about everything they do deserves a little treat. I would use about 10 cheerios to get Joey through bath time, but they helped train him to be patient. Early grooming sections should just be pleasant. Now that he's older, I give green beans or snow peas, and liver treats I make, that are basically dried beef liver. I wouldn't add too many new foods to a puppy's diet, I believe they are more prone to allergies if too large of a variety of food is introduced too soon, it may not show up right away though. I'd wait till 6 months before introducing most foods, and then in tiny amounts, a teaspoon or so. |
I 2nd Cherrios. Mine love them and the baby can chew them so easy. I also buy dental chews from the vet. They like those too. They get a bully stick once a week. Dudley only got one for the first time a couple of weeks ago. He is 5mo. old. With all treats we never leave them alone when they have one. I am scared to death of choking. Congradulations on your new baby. ENJOY. |
I read on here that someone mixed Cheerios with other meaty type treats so the Cheerios smelled meaty. Great idea! I keep a small container with plain Cheerios and organic liver treats (broken into tiny pieces) to use when training. My Sophie loves them! She also loves frozen baby carrots (the really tiny ones) and frozen apple slices. I think the cold and texture help with her teething, too. |
Thanks for the great tips! Do you think Honey Nut Cheerio's are okay? |

Max has always loved Sam's Yams. They are long so I break them in half. Been eatting them since we brought him home at 13 weeks. |
My baby loves VITA-KRAFT yogurt treats! They are good on her stomach and they come in: Peanut butter, chololate, and plain yogurt! Never had a tummy issue with them and she loves them! I get then at Pet's Mart or Pet Co. A friend's mother told me about them because I had the same questions as you. Didn't want to give her treats that weren't made well or upset her delicate little tummy! |
