Personality Change after Neuter? So we decided to go ahead and have Ryle neutered tomorrow and a couple of people have mentioned today that it changes a males personality. Is this true? Did anyone notice any changes in your dogs? |
i personally don't have a male dog but a few of my close friends do. no difference noticed after neuter. |
I have three males...two which are neutered and no it didn't change their personality. I have been told neutering can help with aggressive tendencies, but mine didn't have that issue. |
I suppose it could change some, but some would change more if they weren't neutered, it all depends on the age in which they are neutered. Joey was neutered around 7 months, so testosterone never got a chance to really be strong in his system, and he's stayed my little boy, the only marking he does is outside when he goes for walks. If we hadn't neutered him, I'm sure he would have changed much more in the next few months, one positive change I did note was that he no longer seemed eager to run out the gate or front door. In an older dog that already has several years of testosterone pumping through his system, you might see more of a change, the adrenal glands continue to make some testosterone, so he might not change too much, but he will not be as agitated if he smells a bitch in heat. Older dogs that I've had neutered, still seem to enjoy walks and exercise; they just didn't seem as anxious. Some dogs will gain weight, but some of the weight gain may have come with age anyway. It's probably more important to continue to see that a neutered dog gets exercise. |
I have owned 4 male yorkies, and never noticed a personality change after neutering any of them. What I have noticed is a big improvement in their behavior after neutering. They became easier to train, only marked outside, and became overall better pets. |
We neutered Nikko at 6 months old, and we didn't notice any real change either. It was actually finally at about 9 or 10 months old that we started to notice him start to be calmer and start deciding to relax and take naps occasionally when we weren't playing with him. Lauren & Nikko |
Ryder was neutered at 5 months and was back to himself by the time I picked him up- no changes here, but he was young so it could have something to do with it. Within hours he was his happy lil self, the hardest part was keeping him from playing and being a boy! |
I was worried about that too when I had Max fixed. I posted about it as well... But its been quite awhile now and he hasnt changed one bit... he is still as fiesty as ever! good luck! |
I have 3 male yorkies and 1 female. I had all 3 males neutered and the female spayed recently. My males changed for the better. I had some aggression issues from two of them but since they were neutered, that has calmed down so much. I actually thought i was going to have to rehome one of them because of it, but since the neutering, I have better behaved little boys. |
Well, you're probably pretty anxious yourself today, let us know how everything goes, I hope the little guy doesn't have any problems, and make sure you get those baby teeth removed at the same time! |

i've seen a personality change in a neighbor's dog. They are elderly and their son got them a Shih Tsu to help them out since he wasn't walking after his surgery. Whenever they walk him, he gets anxious and is jumping all around when he sees Maxwell. They met on the day they got them from his son. Recently, I noticed the dog isn't jumping when they walk him and he sees Maxwell. He looks and goes on. He's like a different dog. I didn't know it would change their personality. Hope this info helps. |
