Anyone with cone collar experience :( I am in tears. Mya had her hernia repair about a week ago, and the staples got infected....she now has to have a cone on. I tried the onsie, but it was clear the incision needed air so I am forced to put her cone on and I am in tears. She is miserable won't even go #2 cuz she can't sniff. I was looking into an inflatable one, but I don't know where to get one. I hate how unhappy she is I am just miserable. I trimmed the cone to make it shorter because she kept getting stuck with her head down, and it is a little better now but it seems so heavy on her little head. Any help? suggestions? words of relief? :( Lauren and Mya |
She is fine. you are the one that is upset. dogs adapt just fine to a cone. I hope you didn't trim it too far so that she can bend and get to her stitches. They are usually fitted at the vets office for the cone so that its just long enough for them not to reach their incision. she needs to wear it whenever you cannot keep both eyes on her. If you take her out to potty you can take the cone off as long as you are watching her. same goes for eating. however if she just can't leave her sutures alone for the few minutes it takes to pee/poop then she needs to wear it. think of it as a fun party hat. its not hurting her and she really isn't as miserable as you think she is with it on. |
i made sure she still can't reach. I know she is okay sigh but I just hate seeing her so immobilized :( I just want her to be better |

Those look like a good choice, unfortunately I need something more promptly. I know pet supplies plus sells "comfy cones" which are very similar to those softee cones...I actually am considering going to Petco in the morning (asap of course as my compulsive nature wants Mya to be comfortable asap sigh) anyway...I am going to try and get her the inflatable ProCollar. It's worth a try, sigh. |
I would let her take it off when she is near you. If you are watching her, then the cone doesnt need to be on. This way, she can have breaks from wearing the cone :D |
Well I am with her 24/7, literally every day....and even then I couldn't keep her from licking because she would always get 1 or 2 in before I could catch her/stop her...which I think is the reason for it getting infected :( It was my irresponsibility that let it happen thinking I could stop her from licking just by watching her....it's not full-proof sigh.. I am hoping this new collar tomorrow will ease my worries and her discomfort. Maybe once it heals a little bit and is less infected I will give her some breaks from it briefly but I am just too nervous for now :( |
Remy has had two surgeries for hernias and both times she wore a soft cone collar ,I got it at the vets . So check at a few vet offices one of them should have some in stock. Just remember the more your pup wears the collar the faster the stitches will heal and the sooner you will be through this ordeal ! Eileen |
Relief! I am now a huge advocate for the inflatable ProCollar. Mya is so much happier and so much more mobile, she is even chewing a new bone I got her! So, for anyone with as many dislikes of the e-collar as me, this is a great alternative! |
