Confused about rabies booster??? I understand that after a 1yr old your suppose to vaccinate , giving boosters. Parvo/distemper . After that, it should be for life , correct? My confusion is on the Rabies vaccine. I am being told by the vet office Suzi needs anther rabies vaccine and then she will protected for 3 years? I thought ALL rabies vaccines were good for 3 years? If she needs anther Rabies shot, I ought to wait until the other booster is administered , wait 3 weeks , and then take her again for anther Rabies vaccine? Suzi is 19months old. My puppy is just 4 months old , and has an appointment for Tues. AM . They want to vaccinate her for Rabies , and anther Parvo /distemper shot? Does she need this one at 16 weeks ? I know she needs the Rabies, but anther Parvo distemper vaccine? HELP! |
Where I live, they give the one year rabies around 6 months of age and then the next year they get the 3 year rabies and now mine get the distemper every 3 years as well. Just make sure not to give the shots the same day. I separate mine by a month. |
Here is a link of the AAHA recommendations....if you scroll down, you will find a table that gives exact dates of when vaccines are given to puppies: http://www.aahanet.org/PublicDocumen...s06Revised.pdf Most vets now do not immunize with DHPP every year after one year of age. Those vaccines are given every three years. As for rabies, it really depends on your state laws. |
I believe rabies is given to them as puppy's then again a year later. I don't think they are given the full dose as a pup. It is the law that they HAVE to get rabies every 3 yrs. As for their vaccines....I have titers done. If they have enough antibodies in them they don't get the shot. If not...they get the vaccine. Unfortunately there isn't a titer for rabies. I don't like them having shots every year...I don't feel it's necessary...that is why I have titers done. |

For the puppy, how many rounds of puppy vaccines has she had and at what age did they begin? The newer vaccination protocol recommends 2-3 rounds of vaccinations and they should not begin until at least 10 weeks of age. Definitely do not let them give the distempter/parvo on the same day as rabies. I believe in CA the rabies law is also that they be given this at 4 months of age. If you need to, I'd give the rabies first and then wait 2-3 weeks for the distempter/parvo. Good luck!!!! |
Let us not confuse these vaccines. Some of these posts are confusing to me. Yes, many vets do still give the DHPP every year in spite of the fact that the AVMA and AAHA have changed the recommendation to every three years. Rabies should not really be lumped into that discussion as it varies from state to state. Rabies is governed by state law. DHPP is not! |
Kimbo had 4 Parvo shots. They were @ 7, 9, 12, and 15 weeks. He is 18 weeks old and went to the vet last week. He got his Rabies and the 2nd Bordatella. He's had lots of other vaccinations, but I'm trying to stick to the ones you asked about. I'm supposed to bring him back on his 1st birthday to have his "Rabies Booster". That's what they called it. It should last 3 years. |
puppy distemper combos are giving usually at 8, 12, and 16 weeks. So at 4 months your puppy should be getting the last distemper combo. I'd then wait another month or wait until her spay to get her the rabies vaccine. Puppies get the rabies vax that is good for 1 year (which also happens to be the same vaccine that is good for 3 years). its just protocol that the first rabies vaccine given is only good for 1 year, then after that it can be given every three years IF that is the law in your state. Some states require the vax to be given every year. For Suzi, She does need her rabies booster now at 19 months and then she will be protected for 3 years. I would get her distemper booster done first, then wait a few weeks for the rabies. After this distemper booster i'd then change your vax protocol. that depends on your living/environmental situation (whether she needs other vaccines based on the area you live in). I personally stopped giving vaccines after her 2 year old distemper vax (which i only gave her 1/2 of). |

California requires rabies at four months, then every three years after that. http://vaccines.dogsadversereactions...RabiesLaws.pdf Since the rabies vaccine can cause a serious reaction, it should never be given along with the other shots. Wait a couple of weeks in between to be safe. |
Thank you for the replies. I called my vet . I was told Suzi will need anther Rabies vaccine, and it will be good for 3 yrs after that. Then I am supose to get her a booster vaccine for distemper/parvo. CA does require the Rabies vaccine. A dog can't get a city license w/o proof of the Rabies shot . The puppy is going on Tuesday to finish her set of vaccines. She is now 4 months old. She will be 18 weeks old her next vet visit. Parvo is bad in my area. This is why I need to be very cautious and make certain my 2 are vaccinated , and NOT over vaccinated either .With the puppy we have followed the guidelines for the vaccines . |
Yes they want to give my baby rabies shot next week he is 4 month's old ???? He is my first yorkie. He weighs 3 lb. |
Reaction to Rabies Vaccinet I would like to know if anyones yorky has had a reaction to the rabies vaccine. My yorky, Nitro, had his first rabies vaccine last year. Now after that vaccine he has a bald patch on his hind leg where he got the shot. The vet tells me that it is common for small dogs to have this reaction. Next shot they will give into the muscle. So why not give the first rabies shot in the muscle if this such a common reaction? |

You may want to ask this to verify it, but I believe that there are two manufacturers of the rabies vaccine and only one is given intramuscularly. The other one is given subcutaneously. |
