Homemade Puppy food Hi everybody: I am looked over the recipes that are posted here and have started making some. I would like to have all my babies eating homemade food as opposed to store brought but I am wondering about puppies. I have a 8 1/2 week furbaby and I'm not sure if there is anything I need to add to any of these recipes to make sure he is getting all the vitamins and nutrients he needs. Can somebody help me please. |
It is really best to speak with a nutritionist that specializes in dogs- ESPECIALLY when it comes to home cooking for a puppy as they have more needs than an adult dog (K/Cals per day, fat intake, protein needs). That being said it is ESSENTIAL that you supplement. I use supplements from Animal Essentials Welcomes You! They have a multivitamin that Layla gets daily and they have a calcium supplement. This was all recommended by Layla's nutritionist- Holistic Veterinarian Pet Nutritionist Holistic Pet Care |
Feeding "real" food to any dog at any age can be confusing if you let it. I've been home cooking for dogs for over 50 years and can tell you right now that none of the many dogs and fosters have ever had one ounce of food related health problems. I always suggest to anyone wanting to switch over to "real" food, to do it one step at a time. Feed red meat only for a few days, then turkey for a few days, then lightly steamed brocolli can be mixed in one of the meats for a few days, then brown rice mixed in for a few days, then try fresh green beans uncooked for a snack for a few days and so on. This is the only way you will know of any allergic reactions. ONE FOOD ITEM AT A TIME! Keep things simple. If you feed real food, then NEVER give them store bought treats, I don't care WHAT it says on the package. Chances are there are things in it they don't list. Always make their treats, give apples, dried fruits, Yogurt, and raw small cut femur bones. They can't actually eat the bones, but they love chewing on them. |
I bet if you ask 20 people how to feed - you'll get twenty different answers :) For me, and for many reasons, I feed a homemade raw recipe with all human grade ingredients and supplements. This recipe was created by my mother who has extensive knowledge in dog nutrition. The recipe has been reviewed and approved by my vet - who also has extensive knowledge on dog nutrition. I serve it with confidence. It has lean hamburger, ground turkey, cottage cheese, rice, eggs, vegetables and supplements. Feel free to pm me if you're interested. |
