Tummy Issues My husband and I are first time Yorkie owners and our little guy Ace has been having issues lately with diahrrea/soft stools. We had him to the vet on 8/17 when the issue first started. They did a stool sample and that came back negative. They recommended feeding him Kellogs all bran and beef. That worked for a few days but as soon as we put him back on his regular dog food (Royal Canin puppy 33) he started to have the runs again. I called the vet back and they recommended feeding him some canned science hills?? ID dog food. We tried that for a few days and his stools would be normal then mushy and then mucusy. Some other dog owners have recommended beef and rice and he has been on that ever since. He usually has one normal stool and as the day progresses the next is softer until the last is usually a pudding consistancy. Sorry if this is TMI. I am afraid to try and put him back on his regular food. The vet had said to switch to the adult royal canin for Yorkies but he is only 6 months old. They said the puppy formula could be to "rich" for him. Has anyone else heard of this?? He is also teething right now and losing teeth. Could that be causing this? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, |

Natural Balance and Wellness have sensitive formulas. Also, adding a little Pumpkin (natural in the can, but not pie filling) can help to make the poop firm ;) Did the Vet check for Coccidia  Welcome to YT ~ We talk about everything here, from poop to vomit so always ask and we will try to help :p |

I don't know if they checked for that or not. The only thing they mentioned was checking for Giardia. He doesn't have any other issues besides his poop being firm. He eats good, drinks plenty, and has plenty of energy still. |
Try the pumpkin into his Rice/Beef. Also get a dog food for senstive stomach (Natural Balance or Wellness is what I would do) and add some to the Rice/Beef each day making it more dog food and less human food :) |

I am not sure how old your baby is but I have two babies and they are 3 1/2 months old. When I got them they were on Purina puppy chow??? I switched them to RC puppy and they got terrible diarrea. I'm not sure if it was from the food or eating grass and leaves outside. I switched again after negative stool samples and vet appointments. I put them on Chicken soup for the puppy lovers soul. They love it!!!! We've been good for two weeks and now the diarrea is back!! They eat everything!! I PUT THEM ON RICE AND CHICKEN FOR TWO DAYS AND STOOLS ARE FORMED!!! |
I had that issue with Moses just a week or so ago. I put him on rice and chicken and absolutely NO treats. I also started feeding him 2 tablespoons of plain organic yogurt twice a day. He has had firm stools for a week now and is back on his regular food, Nutro Ultra Holistic. I am trying to switch him over to a different brand, but we are going very slowly. I still control the treats he gets, but fingers crossed, we have defeated the diarreha. |
Often, giardia has to be checked for a 2-3 times (different samples) for a vet to find it. I think I would get him off the Royal Canin line in case the corn or something else in it is bothering him. Where do you get your dog food - Petco/Petsmart or a high end petfood store? If you go to Petco, I'd recommend you try the Solid Gold line. Or, keep that in mind for later - and feed one of the "sensitive" formulas mentioned above. Just keep in mind those formulas are a bit low in protein, esp. for a puppy, so you may want to supplement w/ a little meat. :) |
