My yorkie is loosing hair...what to do? Hi, I am new to this site and I'm already loving it. I apologize if somebody else already question the same thing... My yorkie is 10 weeks old, he is been scratching in the back of his ears and head, the vet said he has allergy and he is been medicated, it is getting a little better but still a little red with some crusts around. My concern is now he is loosing hair I guess to be scratching too much and we can see the empty spots in his head and ears and the rest of the hair in his head is really thin, poor little boy (Vet said it is normal but I don't know). I am so worried about him. Do you think when he gets better with this allergy, his hair will grow back healthy and thick? Thanks for all your help, Carol (Cujo's mom) |
hmmmm.... Honestly at 10 weeks old, I would think this would be more than just allergies. I am thinking he may have Demodex, since he is so young and this is usually transferred from Momma to pups when nursing. I would have your Vet do a skin scraping for mites :( |
Thanks TLC, I will ask the vet today about the mites... I appreciate your help.:) |

...IDK - personally 10 weeks seems young for allergies :( And if it is to the point of raw, crusty skin and hair lose, something is going on..... Keep us posted :) |

just make sure they NEVER EVER mix ketoconazole and ivermectin in treating demodex as my friends yorkie had ivermectin toxicity from this and a dermatologist recommended it :( there is another drug they use for this as well as dermatologist is using daily doses of interceptor for my friends dog -- a different dermatologist |

what meds did they give you ? |
Thanks all for your concern.... I decided to go to a different Vet yesterday and after the vet did all the tests he said he has Staph infection and ear infection as well, that is why he keeps scratching the back of his ears and is loosing some hair, he gave him some medicine for both and said the hair should be coming back in 2 weeks or so, he said do not worry about it is not any kind os mites (he did the scraping thing) and when puppies they can get this kind of infections... Other than that he said Cujo looks very healthy and everything else is fine...He wants to see him again in 10 days and Cujo has to take his third set of shots then...I feel much better, I will keep you posted, but I think he will get better. |

So, he did check for mites under a scope then? |
When I got Apple, at 11 1/2 weeks, she was a little bald behind the ears, and scratching...I thought it was ear mites and took her to the vet....He did a culture, and determined it was a fungus, and gave me ear drops to use everyday for a week, then once a week...I haven't seen anymore scratching behind the ears, and she has her hair back...And, I have to admit, I don't put the ear drops in her ear once a week  She just hates it...She's 10 months old now, so I'm guessing she's doing o.k. w/o the drops...I'll definitely start up, if she shows symptoms again....Glad you got your baby to the vet and got some meds...I'm sure he'll be fine and dandy real soon.....:) |
