TEARS matting fur Help
 

:confused: My baby's tears seem to get worse and worse. I keep her cut short and the last time I had her cut, the groomer cut the fur on her muzzle short. All the way down. Now, as it grows back and her tears get in it, it looks all matted and gross. What should I do. Let it grow and get thru that transitional gross matty period or keep it cut. I don't really want to have to keep cutting it. I there anything that will help her tears a little???

What are you feeding? Some foods containing grains can cause tearing. To keep it from matting her fur...you need to wipe the area daily with babywipes. Other ways to try to eliminate tearing...switching to distilled water only or putting a tablespoon of unpasturized vinegar in her water.

I'm feeding her Wellness! hope it's not that, cuz she loves it! Destilled water huh? I could try that but somehow it doesn't seem like it could make that much of a difference. Hope I'm wrong. I give her bottled wated cuz I've heard that helps but I guess it isn't distilled. I'll wipe them everyday then. Just regular ole baby wipes?

Yes regular ol' baby wipes and people usually post good results with tearing when feeding Wellness. Unfortunately sometimes tearing is just genetic.

I bought a clear eye solution from Petsmart, to remove tearstains and crusted areas under the eyes for dogs. Use a cotton ball to apppy the solution . It works well, however, you have to be very careful because of the delicate area you are working with . the tear stain solution is safe, and gentle. I can't find mine right now at home, however I use it on my yorkie. Your going to also have to keep it up with a regular grooming routine so the build up does not occur.
My yorkie, becomes uncomfortable with tearstains, or crusts under her eyes . it can impede with their eyesight. It is best not to let it build up , then it is a lot easier to treat.

i just found what I specifilly use . It is Crystal Eye , tear stain removal. For the Removal of tear & other Stains From Animal's Fur. Made By Four Paws. :thumbup:

I use a flea comb to comb out the gunk that Sophie's eyes sometimes produce.

Avery was getting thick dark tears and stains. I read every post about the problem and debated quite a few solutions. First I purchased the tear stain removed, but it doesn't work that great and it doesn't prevent the problem. I read about people feeding their YT's distilled water, but I also read that distilled water is not good for dogs.

So, I purchased a PUR Water Filter for my faucet, and TAH-DAHH, way less tears! Nw he just gets little "eye boogies" from time to time.

Even though this is an old thread, I just wanted to put this out there:

Drinking distilled water over time can leave the body mineral deficient. Water, even bottled or filtered, contains minerals that we need to function properly. Distilled water has those minerals removed.

I have heard that Angel Eyes are very good in dealing with crusty goobers . It is a little costly though. I have used the clear eyes from Petsmart , but that only worked for smaller amounts of goobers, not really a lot of crust. It did not help then.

Also, when I changed the boys food from Wellness Small Breed I noticed a BIG difference in the amount of eye goobies.
They are now eating NOW! Small Breed.

Do not use chemicals on your dog, number one.
Two, take her off the Wellness food.
I was just at a thread talking about teary eye stain and read a couple were feeding Wellness too.
Try the "Go Naturals" line.
Read the ingredients.
Do not buy any kibble that has anything corn or wheat in it but also peas, carrots or sweet potatoes.
These seem to be problem foods.
Try a small teaspoon of whole fat yogurt in her food in the mornings only and only a tiny bit!
Distilled or filtered water. Do Not allow your dog to drink water from the tap.
Clean her eyes gently with a soft cloth rinsed well so to remove any laundered soap residue and gently wash around her eyes with a soft cloth and water (ONLY). Can use a cotton ball but I find it can leave fuzzy stuff in and around her eyes so I just use a soft cotton cloth. Nothing else is necessary to clean her eyes with. Do not use chemicals!

Likely it will make it worse.
Although, the main reason for the gunky eyes is Diet.

If a goopy is stuck hard on her hair beneath her eye, just gently place a damp cloth on the spot to moisten and either gently pick out or comb out.

Don't use chemicals on your dog.
It is NOT necessary. Plus, these are tiny little creatures. Chemicals are way too harsh.

Use a natural shampoo. Something with Oatmeal in it is always nice. We use Vets Best, Oatmeal and Vanilla 2-in-one. Have since day one.

I am sorry to hear of the hair cut. It is going to be a drag for the next year. I know. Just before I got my dog they gave her a similar cut. Hair sticking up into her eyes as it grew out. Was a painful year but we got through it.
What I did was I got Organic Flax Seeds and added some to a pot with filtered water. Brought to a boil and took off heat. Strained. Each time I groomed my dog, I would use the gel from the boiled flax seeds to keep her hair down. It is a pain but it works. It has no odor and is natural. Don;t feed it too her but use it as a control for her hair, to keep it down or at least out of her eyes. Her hair will grow back and with a change in diet her eyes will clear.
It is important to provide fresh water daily, filtered or distilled and to exercise the dog. You want the dog to eliminate. Twice a day at least. Sometimes my girl will only go number two once a day but not on a regular basis.
My dog walks at least three times a day and once which is at least a 1.5 hour walk.
You have to switch her off the Wellness food. Gradually switch her off. Look on line for the transition to new food ratios.
Walk before you feed and a good walk. Elimination is good to encourage.
Do not feed the dog snacks, junk food, like bacon strips, milk bone etc. If you are going to treat the dog use 100% protein snacks and nothing more.
Use in moderation.

As Chrissy said too, She took her dog off of Wellness and went to Now. Now is made by the same company as Go.
Now makes a nice small bite formula as well.
I would try this!
