What do I feed Sophie?!?!? Ok, so I've read and researched different dry foods for Sophie. The problem is, there aren't many options for stores around here for whatever reason! I pretty much have the choice of Petsmart, Petco, Wal-Mart, or Kroger. Sophie has been eating Science Diet Puppy small bites, which she seems to like but I know Science Diet isn't the best food so I want to switch. What is the best food I can get at either Petsmart or Petco? I had bought some Royal Canin Indoor Puppy, but I've seen mixed reviews on that here. I've not opened it yet so I assume I can take it back to Petsmart tomorrow. I know petco has wellness online, but do they have it in stores? Also, price is an issue with my husband. He wants the food to be close to the price of royal canin or science diet. He just doesn't want to spend a lot on food for her. He says like $5 or $6 per pound so no more than $20 for a 3 lb bag of food. Any suggestions? |
From Petco One that we have heard good reviews on and have tried is the Castor and Pollux Natural ultramix or the organix http://www.castorpolluxpet.com/store/dog It sells at our petco for about 15.00 for a 6 pound bag. Looks like it also is sold at some of the higher end grocery stores. Our two liked it... but they eat anything ;) |
Petco has some really great choices. I don't care for any of the brands offered at Petsmart. At Petco, you could get Wellness, Natural Balance or Solid Gold. None of these foods should be over $20 for a 3lb bag. Make sure the choice you make doesn't have any corn or by-products in the ingredients. I always like the first several ingredients to be protein sources, specifically "meals," such as turkey meal, lamb meal, etc. |
I only have a Petsmart in my town, but I see in the above post that PetCo sells Natural balance. I've tried many different foods and this one seems to work the best for both my Yorkie and my Biewer. My biggest problem was eye goop...for both of them. The eye goop has stopped! But it is an allergy free limited ingredient food. They eat it like its prime rib. They love it. I even buy the NB treats. It's actually priced less than RC...if I recall correctly. I've not actually look at bag weight, but bag size for size, NB was cheaper. I pay $10.50 here for the smaller bag. Don't know the lbs as I always immediately transfer to a container to keep it fresh. I've only ever seen two bag sizes though, so this would be the smaller. |
I went there after church today to look. We are going to go ahead and feed her the Royal Canin until it's gone and then we are going to start getting the Wellness Just For Puppy Super5Mix at Petco. Is it a good food from Wellness? |

Yep, that's a good food. I did try a sample bag on Sophie, but she wasn't too keen on it. She prefered the NB. But it all comes down to what your dog likes. It's a great idea to find what others are feeding so it gives you some names of food to try, but you still have to end up feeding what your furbaby preferes the most. Good luck! |

We feed Natural balance dry--and the little chubs are great for travel days or long days out! We take our baby everywhere--and it's nice to have a quick meal for her when we're out! She started on RC and no problems---lots of eye goop though. She just stopped eating it one day and our breeders said to switch her to NB when she was older--so, we switched. GREAT FOOD. love it. her coat looks really healthy! |
We feed our girl Actr1um Holistic for small breeds. No by-products, no corn, no wheat, no colours, no fillers, no artificial preservatives and lots of other goodies. I buy it from our local Walmart for under $12 for a 3.3kg (7.2lb) bag. |
Out of NB, SG and Wellness, I would choose NB, then Wellness, then SG personally. None of them should be over $6 a pound. There is no dog food that comes close to being worth that, IMO. |
Thanks for all your replies. I emailed NB, Wellness, & SG for free samples. So far NB has said they'd be more than happy to send me some free samples! Hopefully the others will too so I can make sure she'll eat them before I buy a big bag! LOL Thanks again, everyone! |
