Health concern - New Yorkie Owner We just adopte a 1 1/2 year old female Yorkie, Mindy! We are new dog owners and have a lot to learn so I am looking for some guidance. Her first two nights were great, we didn't hear a thing from her. But last night she was crying, almost screaming loudly. It started an hour after we went to bed and continued every 1 1/2 - 2 hrs. through the night. I went to her and she appeared to just want attention (perhaps a delayed reaction to her recent separation from the other family and her brother?). She was excited, jumping up and obviously wanting out of her kennel each time. Once she pooped and I cleaned that up but then when my husband got up this morning she had pooped a little more and he changed the pad and put down a clean one. When he returned from his shower, there was something RED on the pad. When I looked it was very red in colour and looks a bit like strawberry jelly with a couple clots or clumps. (she is fixed) We don't know if she pooped it or coughed it up. I'm concerned and not sure what to do next. Does anyone have any ideas or guidance? |
Take her to the Vet ASAP, if it came out of her rear it could signify a big problem. My mom's dog did the same thing and she was having kidney failure, it could also be a urinary track infection of some kind. |

I think a visit to the vet is called for too. Blood, regardless of which end it came from :rolleyes:, needs medical attention. It could be something as simple as a small broken blood vessel due to diarrhea caused by the stress of a new home, but it could also be an indication of something more serious. Always better to error on the side of caution. |
Welcome and congrats on your new baby. They can get some bloody diahrea from stress if they have a sensitive tummy or food changes. Since she is crying too I would definately have your vet check her out. They can give you something to settle her tummy. Please keep us posted. |
Take her to the vet and take whatever it was she coughed/pooped with you, that will help them alot in indentifying the problem. Good luck with your baby! |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Yorkies can be prone to having bouts of collitis and/or HGE Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis. Mostly cause is unknown, but is thought to be stress-related. ( food changes, any stressors: things that upset the dog) Both can come on quickly and due to the smaller size of most Yorkies can be quite rapidly debilitating and requires treatment from a Vet: the sooner the better (and the less expensive).
