Bones on the Raw Diet I would like to make absolute and complete sure that it is safe to let my dog eat chicken legs and paticularly the bones. I read through the posts and one was very informative but got pretty lengthy and I did not see this in there. I went to several links with info but the links were based on the diet for dogs in general. Some Yorkies are very small so I just need to make sure for my own piece of mind. The second question is ... at what age it best to introduce this to them? 7 week old puppy? |
I don't think anyone can tell you that anything is "absolutely and completely safe", unfortunately. I know many members here feed Prey Model (raw meaty bones, organ meats, etc) and their babies do well. I feed Pre-Made Raw (Primal) and love it. As far as age, I'm not really sure when some Prey feeders have introduced it to their pups, but hopefully they'll chime in. |
I am feeding my rottie puppy raw at eight weeks. My girlfriend just purchased her Yorkie last weekend and I advised her to look into the raw diet. I directed her to this website and she found some info on but most was people trying to sell their own brand of raw product. My vet adivsed me against feeding my rottie puppy raw. I asked if there was a vet in the area that did. He was not aware of one. I still went ahead and feed raw. Well we took the Yorkie puppy to the same vet. About two weeks after I took my rottie. He asked if I was feeding raw and if we intended to feed the yorkie raw. I informed him yes. He told me since the last conversation he had done some looking into the raw diet. He said if you are well informed on the nutrinonal issue (balanced diet) he was not against it but his only concern was contamination of the meat with bacteria. He also advised me of freezing prepared food for a few days prior to feeding. As far as the feeding the whole bone. I am not yet. Even the Rottie puppy is getting ground up hind quarter bone and all. I plan on switching my rottie to eating the whole bone and all unground at a later date. What I would like to know is can a yourkie ever be able to eat the bone with out grinding it. I will tell you that the Yorkie inhales her ground chicken. I am currently feeding her about seven ounces of ground chicken split up over four times a day. It is real important to do your research on this subject. There are a few good books. One being Raw Meaty Bones. I ordered it off of Amazon. With out a doubt I would grind up the hind quarters and may have to do that all the time. The grinder I got was from Norhern Industrial Suppy. It costs about $100.00. If you read some of the comments that are left some are about this subject of grinding hind quarters. I can not tell you enough Do Your Research!!! The Rottie and Yorkie just love the diet. Everytime I open the fridge they come running into the kitchen slidding on the tile. They just can't get there soon enough to see if they are gonna be feed. I put Evo kibble down last night just to see how the puppies would react. They turned their noses to it and walked away. Didn't even give it a second sniff. Another great tip is to dehydrate beef liver and use for a treat. Oh my god they absolutly love this. Having a treat they will do anything for sure makes training a hundred times easier. I only have about three weeks experiance actually feeding raw but I spent the last year researching on the subject. I feel that I have made the best decesion for me and the puppies. Help! This is the second day on the raw diet for my 2 dogs. I started with ground beef yesterday and today. One of my Yorkies has a bloated belly. It scared me half to death when I picked her up she felt a pound or 2 heavier and her belly was bloated like she is about to give birth. Has anybody experience this or have any advice. I am really concerned. |
I feed a Prey Model Raw diet to my yorkies! Yes, my yorkie is able to eat chicken bones, rabbit bones and turkey. Quail too but we've never fed that. She could also handle fish but she absolutely hates fish so after a few times, I don't waste my money on fish. I do give her some pork bones but she mostly just chews the meat off of those but maybe gets a little bone and its the actual chewing of the bones that is so good for their teeth. My puppies were also weaned to raw. They do have a little more trouble with the bones but they LOVE trying. They chew away at the bones and it probably satisfies some of those puppy urges to chew on things. They do say that ground increases your chances of too much bacteria so I think at this point, I would recommend you start trying to give your Rottie some actual meat with bones and see how it goes! Let me know if you have any questions. I've been feeding raw to my yorkie for about a year and a half. I also fed my senior collie raw for about a year before she passed away (nothing to do with raw). She did great on it and I'm so glad she was able to enjoy her meals as much as she did before she passed away. Good luck! |
