It might be a Tick!!! Hi...think Dustie has picked up a Tick...looked throughy the magnifying glass..it looks like one...question is ? should I try and remove it..or just leave it to drop off...He only seems to have the one and he isn't biting it at all. If I do remove it..what do I put on afterwards. Asked at the Petsmart shop..and they just said..See A vet...but surely this isn't necessary for every tick he might get is it? Chrisann..x |
If it's a tick it will most likely be attached to the skin & you will need to remove it. I saw a thread on YT that said to soak a cotton ball in some dish soap & then put the cotton ball on the tick & it will come right off. Buster had a tick about a month ago & I wasn't aware of this and we plucked the tick off with tweazers & flushed the tick down the toilet. Do NOT wait for the thing to fall off - it is sucking blood & will get huge & could make your dog sick. Remove it immediately & make sure to destroy the bug. Good luck!! |
You have to be sure you remove the tick the right way, or the sticker can stay and an infection will result, that's why many people say never just pull off the tick. I would call the vet, and see what he says. It use to be that you could drop a bit of clear nail polish on the tick, and wait till it dried and the tick would release the sticker on his own and then you could take the tick off, but I've read that this is no longer recommended, I don't know about the other methods such as oil, or detergents. I always recommend that people maintain a good phone relationship with their vet and staff, and they can tell you if you can do the procedure at home. If your vet doesn't like to give phone information, find one who does. The tick isn't taking that much blood, so don't panic and bull it out, also, if your area has trouble with ticks passing on certain diseases, your vet would be aware of that. |
To Buster and Baileys mum...Well thankyou so much..I just tried the soap trick on a small peice of cotton wool..took a few seconds but then it just dropped off...completely..all gone and clean. I think it was a tick...so that was brilliant and it did work. Again...many thanks..worth knowing...must be something in soap that they don't like..so worth keeping this remedy somewhere for others to read. Nancy 1999..Thankyou also for your input....greatly appreciated..x Chrisann xx:) |
glad to know you were able to get it off! I was gonna say the same thing about the soap and cotton ball trick b/c using tweezers can be tricky sometimes b/c you have to make sure you get the head so we always like to use the soap and cotton ball trick! :) If your baby gets another tick you know what to do now! :D and if you want to have fun...take the tick outside and light a match and stick it to it! :p We like to burn a tick if it bites our babies! :p You mentioned should you put anything on it afterwards...if you want you can soak a q-tip in alcohol and dab the bite spot. We usually do that just to kill any germs but you really dont have to...we just do cause thats what we do if we get a tick ourselves. LOL |
