How old was your Yorkie at neutering?? Hi everyone, Fagan is going to be 20 weeks old next weekend and we are looking into having him neutered. Our vet recommends the procedure at 51/2 to 6 months old. He's not lifting his leg consistantly yet..he does it on occasion. How old did were people's Yorkies for neutering and if male does he lift his leg? Thanks, you guys are great! :animal36 |
I had Chachi done at 7 months but my vet would have done it at 6 mos. He didnt lift his leg and still doesnt. He also no longer humps his teddybear. |
Jo was 8 months old when he was neutered and Riley will most likely be done around 6 months...it depends on his teeth at the time. |
Jo-Jo..What do the teeth have to do with it? Just curious. |

Thanks..that makes sense. |
It's really best to fix a yorkie when they are a tad older than 6 months. My vet says 8 months. The reason for this is that they have problems losing their baby teeth so if you wait those extra couple of months chances are the teeth will be gone but if there are a few straglers, they can extract them while the pup is under and they won't have to go under twice. |
I got Thor done right at 6 mos. He had started marking, and it was bad news! |
I had Lucky done at 7 months and 7 baby teeth pulled! |
Capone actually got nuetered a couple days shy of him being 2 months old. He had to have inguinal hernia repair and the vet figured they might as well nueter him while he was under. We bought him about a week later. He has lost his baby teeth with no problem, thank goodness. |
Hefner was neutered by the breeder before I got him at 12 weeks. Buddha was neutered at 8 months but they wouldn't pull his teeth cuz he had too many baby teeth left and referred us to a specialist. We are working with a homeopathic vet to help the others fall out. |
Thanks for all the input guys!! It helpsz to feel like your making informed decisions. :) |

lucky is a 5 month old male. he was just neutered 2 weeks ago. he never lifted his leg only squats and he still does squat. it seems alot of people on this site have multiple dogs. that make lifing almost a given b/c dogs seem to copy what the other dogs do eventually. i only have one so he has no one to copy but me and i squat :D . lol |
Stewie started lifting his leg @ 11 mos. :( |
I would talk to your vet about the teeth and see what he wants to do. My vet pulled 4 teeth that he could tell were not going to come out on my female who was spayed at 6 months. He also pulled some of Chachis. All the rest have came out on their own. |
Starsky was neutered almost 2 weeks ago. He is 7 months. He had two baby teeth pulled. He was lifting his leg around 4 to 5 months and started marking right before he was neutered. I think he still has a little testosterone in his body, but he gradually slowing down on the humping business. He did really well with the surgery. He didn't seem to slow down at all. I had to make him slow down! Evey dog takes the surgery different I guess. |
Stomper was "ready" at 4 months old so we got it done ASAP since we didn't plan to breed him. |
In the States, my non-Yorkie dogs have been neutered at 6 - 8 months. My vet here in England says he prefers to do it at about a year. A year??? Wellllll, they could do it sooner if there are behavior problems. The first time he starts humping something or starts marking, I'm going to be there begging! |
Dilly just got snipped at 4 months he was lifting leg at 3 months . |
Logan just got neutered friday. He turned 19 weeks yesterday. He was either just started to mark or going through he terrible twos not sure which. He had never lifted his leg. However, since his surgery his has lifted his leg once and been a little more hump happy then he was before. Not sure if this is normal right after surgery or not. I gonna wait a couple days before i worry. The vet did not remove any teeth. Let me say my yorkie is big he was already 7.2 lbs when he went in to get neutured. |
Chicle just got neutered about 2 weeks ago now.. and hes 7months |
Gucci is 1 yr old and hasnt being spay yet.(medical reasons) She will get spay soon. Our vet also recommends to spay/neuter around 6 months, but it can be done as soon as 8 weeks I believe. |
Our doggie health care plan stated that he must be neutered by the age of 6 months for them to cover the cost involved so Ted was neutered 2 weeks before he was 6 months old. |
Gus was almost 7 monthes. Since then, he mostly swats to pee but will lift his leg sometimes. And will mark like crazy but only outside! He used to hump like crazy before being fixed, but now he only does it once in a while. Like when he's roughhousing with my husband or son. |
Thanks guys.. It sounds like 6 months is the average time. I guess we should start looking at dates. I'm not sure how his baby teeth are comming. We will have to have them checked. Anyway, as usual, everyone here is so helpful!! :) |
I had Amos neutered as soon as my vet would allow (6 months I think). But he started lifting his leg at about 3 1/2 months old!!!! Yes, that early...I even called my vet when I saw him do it because it freaked me out that he would be doing it that early! |
