veggie ideas needed Our new little rescue is almost 8yrs old. He is a pudge at 15 lbs  The vet that saw him prior to adoption said his ideal weight should be no more than 11lbs and to only feed him 1/4 cup 2x day. I am currently mixing the wellness he was on with TOTW to transition him. I felt very bad this am after feeding him because he acts as though he is starving. Standing on hind legs and barks like crazy at me. I did steam some fresh green beans today for him to add to his food as a filler. I am going to pick up some raw baby carrots as well. I am looking for other ideas for other low cal veggies to help fill my little boys belly. |
please buy regular carrots. Baby carrots have chlorine in them and aren't as great as we are lead to believe i hear a lot of yorkies like frozen peas- those would be filling. fruit is also great- bananas- apples, pears. |
l give Rockie the carrots. He loves those. |
"Hi" Lisa, I'm from PA too. :wavey: Good for you for Rescuing an 8 year old Yorkie. :) I also have a "Pudge". My Rudy weighs 19 lbs and he's 3 years old. I add cooked green beans to their food sometimes as a filler like you talked about. I have given them canned no-salt added carrots also. Can't think of anything else right now. |
Thanks for the ideas. I am going to pick up some frozen peas and carrots today for variety. |
I have a garden, so lately I've been giving Zoey fresh raw zucchini, bell peppers and green beans along with her usual carrots and assorted fruits. I'm so lucky...she loves everything edible, lol. She'd be fat as a pig, if I wasn't super careful about her diet. :) |
Great we're feeding/trying to feed our "kids" veggies and fruit. Maybe our two legged "kids" could take a lesson:D. Zeke will try/likes just about any veggie/fruit. Zack will have nothing to do with either. Be careful of the seeds, especially apple seeds, as some can be very toxic. Check out the "Stickys" in the Health/Diet Forum for what's ok to give to our pups. |
green beans are a good filler i get organic green beans frozen from whole foods |
Are raw green beans okay or should they be steamed or blanched? Milo loves raw carrots and we would like to expand his veggie intake. Thanks. |

Zoey loves raw green beans from the garden...also tomatoes and zucchini. Cut up into bits because she has a very small mouth. |
OMG:eek: I did not know baby carrotts were bad. I have given them to my two(not a lot but,I have given them some).I do add frozen green beans to there last meal. I don't know what I would do without YT!! You learn something new every day!! |
My little dog ljust loves snow peas (in the pod). I cut them up and we do "training" with them. It is treat time, but she has to do something to earn them. All dogs need to work on manners and I like to mke it fun. Your new rescue might have been a snacker all day and feel deprived at first. Maybe a few in-betweens might keep him from worrying about the next meal. Have fun together. Does your little guy like to go for walks?:aimeeyork |

Yep! He likes to walk. Over the last few weeks, he has stopped begging after his meals, enjoys a variety of veggies AND he is down to 13.9lbs too!!!! |
