is it ok if i wait until my boy turns 1 yo before I get him neutered/teeth removed? hi all- i just read an article posted in one of the threads here about the side effects of neutering/spaying your yorkie before he/she reaches puberty. it said something about their bones growing abnormally and later causing hip problems... anyways, that being said, have any of you waited until your baby was 1 yo before you got them fixed? my yorkie also needs to have some of his baby teeth removed and i only want to put him under once. he's got double rows of teeth on the top and bottom. if i wait a year to get him neutered, is it bad that his baby teeth are in there that long? |
The bone issue is very small (something like .6) but it is mainly for large dogs and not small dogs. The studies have been posted on YT about this. This is in regards to juvenille spay/neuter at 6 weeks or a little older. How much does your boy weigh? Yes you can have problems if you let their teeth go until a year old. |
My little boy is 7 months old and was neutered today AND had 12 baby teeth pulled! He also had double rows of teeth. He weighs 3 lbs and did great. He is laying on my shoulder right now resting. I was nervous about getting it done but he was grinding teeth due to the double rows and I thought it would be best to get it done sooner rather than later. |
Bobby was just over a year when he got neutered and had 1 baby tooth pulled. No problems here. |
My boy turned one Aug 1st, and got neutered on the 6th. He is completely fine, and maybe even marking less... maybe to soon to tell. I think his breeder had his baby teeth pulled, I don't see any. I got him on his birthday that's why I don't know. |
Retained baby teeth can become infected and the infection can spread to the adult teeth. They can also make the adult teeth crooked and weaker. Here's a good article for you to read: Chinaroad Lowchens of Australia - all about retained deciduous canine teeth |
Dudley's breeder says 6mo. We are wanting him to get to 3lbs. before having it done. So far, no double teeth. His bottom teeth right in front are all gone. He looks so funny. Poor baby is gumming his food right now. I don't want to put him under but once too. Hope your baby does good but those teeth need to come out. |
I had the same concerns about eary spay/neuter...I discussed Apple's teeth w/my vet (and his specialty is teeth), and he said not to worry about it 'till she was a year old...I had made a decision not to spay Apple 'till she is 18 months old, but if she still has baby teeth @ a yr. old, I'll have her spayed at the same time...I do think the long bone connection issues are more prevalent w/larger breeds, but there are other concerns, such as bladder incontinence, due to early spay, more of a chance for reactions to vaccinations, and I'm sure you've read about the other small issues, since you've done your home-work...I know you are getting different opinions on this, but I've always been a firm believer in gathering all the information you can, and making the best decision for your baby, that you and your vet are comfortable with...Needless to say, watching those little tiny mouths during this process is key...If they stop eating, and seem in a bit of pain, around their mouth, then a dental visit is in order...So far, we're doing just fine, playing lots of tug-of-war and praying the adult teeth will come out soon... |

thanks all for the helpful advice. yes, i think i might get his teeth removed sooner. i think i will wait till my baby reaches 9 months rather than a year. i jsut hate constantly worrying about it. i keep playing tug of war with him, hoping they will fall out, but those baby teeth sure are stubborn! |
Personally - I would just get it done sooner rather than later. I'm a "get it over with" kind of person though! I don't think it's going to make ANY difference whether you spay now or at a year old. Might as well get those yucky baby teeth now to prevent bad breath problems and get the recoup out of the way. I've known a LOT of dogs in my lifetime -- most all of those who were spayed/neutered before a year old and there are no issues or problems. It's all a matter of personal preference. I definitely would do the teeth removal/neuter at the same time though, not separate times. |

Neutering right at six months is perfectly safe. In fact, studies have shown that pediatric spaying and neutering (after two months or two pounds) also has no long term side effects. It has been endorsed by the American Veterinary Association and the American Kennels Club, along with many humane societies: This is a great resource for more information: Early (Pediatric) Spay/Neuter |

I too agree with Brister and Ladymom, I might wait on a female, but never a male, you want to get them neutered before too much testosterone enters the system. The testicles make the bulk of testosterone, but the adrenal glands make some too, and the longer you wait, the more likely that he will mark. Once established, marking can be very hard to eliminate, and it takes a month after neutering before most testosterone is out of the system. |
